FYBF – The Blessing and the Curse Edition

September 12, 2014 By: mamagrace7135 Comments

It’s probably no surprise for those who know me. I’m an animated, demonstrative kinda gal.

Put me in a high pressure situation like public speaking or meeting a sponsored post deadline while the twinions are sick and the nervous energy is palpable.

Years ago, in the bland, dull world that be corporate, while attending a training course, the entire team had to individually stand up the front and read excerpts from the great late Martin Luther King Jr’s historical speech, “I Have A Dream”

I HAVE A DREAM

The purpose of the exercise was to hone our public speaking skills: to annunciate properly; speak with conviction; ‘feel’ the words we were reading aloud.

Well, Ms Highly Emotional couldn’t get passed “I have a dream…”

I started thinking how the speech was still so relevant today; that decades after this speech was first delivered, society was still battling with racial and gender equality.

My voice started to quiver, tears welling up.

Unable to finish, I walked back to my seat deeply embarrassed.

Laughing off the light-hearted teasing from my colleagues, there was some serious turmoil going on within.

“Why can’t I keep my shit together???

It is both a blessing

How much of a relief if someone just came up and asked if I was okay, try and see if there was something else going on because years later as I found out, there were tons of unresolved issues brewing internally.

During a counselling session last year, Penny my lovely psychologist suggested that perhaps, I was the kind of person that felt everything – pain, excitement, joy, stress, love – to the point I’d get flustered, overwhelmed. Confused, even.

“Aaaand, that’s a bad thing, right ???” I asked cautiously.

“No, not at all. It’s about being aware of it. Be mindful that that’s what’s happening. But also accept that this is who you are…”

Damn Penny for making it sound so easy.

She’s obviously good at what she does. Lucky for me.

Yesterday was RU OK Day, a mental health initiative where we ask those around us if they’re okay.

Because you just never know how much you can help someone in lightening an emotional load.

Even if you missed out on asking someone yesterday, it’s not too late to ask someone today or any other day.

Four simple yet powerful letters that can mean the world to your beloved or a random stranger: RU OK?

FYBF – The Postie Edition

September 5, 2014 By: mamagrace7133 Comments

In a desperate bid to stop my two monkeys climb the walls and more importantly, the furniture, a trip to the cinema seemed to be the perfect solution.

Slim pickings on a Tuesday morning, we went with Postman Pat the Movie.

FYBF The Postie Edition 2

Now there’s 87 minutes of my life I won’t get back.

For the sake of an entertaining #FYBF post, I thought of taking some photos throughout the torturous viewing but who needs spoiler alerts, right?

Besides, I was too busy dealing with the twinions’ demands to run to the back of the huge screen and “Switch it ooooffff !!!”

Nothing like a spectacular preview of the new Planes movie prior to mislead the boys into delirious excitement only to have it all crashing.

“What happened to Dusty? Wait. What? I got Postman Pat instead?”

Truth be told, for all the cheesy kids shows out there, I love me a bit of Postman Pat and his black and white cat.

My dad was a postie, an awesome one at that.

Dad the Postman

Looking absolutely dapper in his uniform, coming home after a day of zipping around town delivering mail on his little ringky dink 250CC motorbike, there were plenty of stories of lovely elderly women who would lovingly leave him a cookie and milk at their mailboxes. Then there were the nasty accidents that saw him come out of hospital with bandaged knees and elbows.

Not a postie but another amazing dad is Mr Surfer.

I could not have pulled off any of those half marathons or City2Surf runs without his steadfast and unwavering support.

While I put in endless hours of training, he’s dedicated just as much time ensuring our ship sails smoothly.

Sneaking out of the house to pull off the nighttime photo shoots, there was my fleet’s 1st (and only) mate taking over on dinner, bath time and bed duties.

You know what, you’re all right, Mr Surfer.

I know you said that all you wanted this Father’s Day is “A big sloppy kiss and a slap across the chops” but I think I can do better than that.

After all, you do. All the time.

FYBF The Postie Edition

Happy Father’s Day to all our dads, granddads, stepdads and role model dads. We will remember fondly and dearly miss those who are no longer with us.

Got anything special planned this Father’s Day?

FYBF – The Happy Chaos Edition

August 22, 2014 By: mamagrace7143 Comments

An extraordinary revelation about twins is that no matter what, you’re outnumbered.

I’m not the only one that gets scared.

There have been numerous playground incidents when a bewildered child will run away in tears and utter confusion because they’ve just seen double!

Rarely do my boys meet their match, until last weekend.

Aunty Daisy and Uncle Pal came over for a visit just like they have in the past but this time, they brought along the entire brood.

The torrential rain earlier that day forced us in the tight confinements of the lounge room.

FYBF Happy Chaos 2

Two sets of (high energy) twin boys, a cute as a button five year old and four disheveled, exhausted parents.

How did we survive?

With dispersed lashings of red wine, of course! Well, for the mums, anyway.

FYBF Happy Chaos 5

Dads were on duty with children left to their own crazy devices.

But there was playful harmony.

“Wow!” peeping through the door, Aunty Daisy was just as surprised as I was.

“Can it actually be? A case of…happy chaos?!!!”

And she was right. Sure we had little monkeys climbing on the lounge, tipping boxes of Lego and scattered potato chips all over the floor but with no tears, shrieks or tantrums, I’ll take the crazy lickity split.

Then finally, when the rain relented and the sun came out to play, so did our little tribe.

FYBF Happy Chaos

Impromptu performances with sparklers that was almost accident free. (One slightly burnt little finger but nothing that a bandaid and big kisses couldn’t fix).

FYBF Happy Chaos 3

Four hours is nowhere near enough time but you make do with what you get and you cherish it for every single moment.

The odds of having identical twins is 3 in 1,000. What’s even slimmer is finding another twin family so special they’ve become part of your own.

FYBF Happy Chaos 4

And that my friends, is the amazing love and friendship blogging can bring.

How do you survive big get togethers? Is there happy chaos? More importantly, is there red wine?

FYBF – The #smartbeauty Challenge Edition

August 15, 2014 By: mamagrace7140 Comments

***This post is a review for the Garnier Pure Active 3 in 1 product. It is an entry for the #smartbeauty Challenge for Kidspot Voices 2014***

I don’t care what the relationship experts say. My most important responsibility as Mr Surfer’s wife is to always prove him wrong.

Every morning is stress city in our house. (I’m sure no different in any other). Ruthless negotiations to have at least a bite of toast, then wrestling with the twinions to get dressed for daycare, the last words I want to hear from my beloved husband is:

“You’ve got 15 minutes to get ready”

Blood goes straight to the temples. Nostrils flare. Horns start to grow.

I have a shower and get ready in a panic akin to a state emergency then leap into the car as he’s slowly pulling out of the driveway, threatening to leave without me.

Harmonious happy couple we are not.

FYBF 15 Minute Makeover 7

Invited by Kidspot Voices of 2014 to participate in Garnier’s #smartbeauty Challenge, the chance to win another spouses’ battle was right there on a silver platter.

Hence, the following conversation:

Me: “I’m going to write about a 15 minute Hot Mama makeover challenge”

Mr S: Pffft

Me: “Er, excuse me?”

Mr S: “Really? Come on, lovely. You can barely get ready in 30 minutes…”

Right. Game on!

A heated discussion about how it takes time to make an effort in my appearance and if I hadn’t, especially on our first date, he wouldn’t have found me attractive then never married me and we wouldn’t be where we were today: sleep deprived and arguing in a lounge room infested with playdoh and Lego pieces while twin monkeys relentlessly climbed all over us.

It was going to be tough but I was determined.

FYBF 15 Minute Makeover2

Step 1:

Use a 3 minute egg time. Forgo shaving or shampooing. Brush teeth, wash face with Garnier’s Pure Active 3 in 1. Perfect for this challenge, it’s a facial cleanser, scrub and mask that can be used daily. With my shower time restricted, I was still able to clean the excess dirt and oil then work on the crucial T-zone to clear my pores with the pumice stone elements.

On the evenings when I can afford to have a longer shower, I can leave it on for 3 minutes to dry and use as a mask.

Lastly in the shower, lather up essential body bits: underarms and chacha. Done.

Step 2:

Slap on moisturizer on legs and arms, forget the rest.

Step 3:

Adapt the sneaky Jamie Oliver trick where he prepares ingredients and equipment for an hour to cook his so called 30 minute meals and step into already laid out clothes (Cheating but hey, totally allowed, right?)

Step 4:

Apply facial moisturizer and BB cream

FYBF 15 Minute Makeover3 (1)

Step 5:

Just one work over of powder! Wrinkles are endearing!

Step 6:

Use a dual purpose brow brush for eyebrows and eyes while using same eyeshadow colour suited for both brows and lids.

Step 7:

Get your eyelash curler and mascara on!

Step 8:

Quick brush of the hair and put up in messy (but edgy) pony tail.

Or use this “Hair Bun Buddy” that was the best Reject Shop find EVER!

Roll, snap and wrap!

FYBF 15 Minute Makeover4

With only 1 minute left, getting flustered caused me to lose my concentration and my socks. By the time I found them, it was time up!

Close, so close (minus shoes and red lipstick application).

FYBF 15 Minute Makeover 5

Still pretty happy with both effort and result the comments from Mr Surfer though, were far from admirable.

FYBF 15 Minute Makeover

“Well, now you can ‘almost’ get ready in 15 minutes after your first attempt, let’s see if practice can make perfect.”

Ouch.

“Put THAT in your blog post”

Gee, there’s no pleasing some people. Or proving them wrong.

FYBF – The Bucket List Edition

August 8, 2014 By: mamagrace7136 Comments

***This is a sponsored post for Choosi Insurance. As always, opinions expressed are my own as well as the below kooky Bucket List items***

For those of you who will be there, when we meet at Problogger in 3 weeks, I will be faring as a 43 year old.

43. Wow.

I still stand by my philosophy that age is an attitude.

If there’s anyone to prove that to me, it’s my recently turned 80 year young mother.

(I’m banking on inheriting her flawless, wrinkle free skin)

Yet, it’s so simple to believe that we have ample time on this earth. What doesn’t get done today will happen tomorrow.

Or will it?

43 sounds seasoned. Mature, even. (Like how I’m steering away from the word ‘old’?)

And for all of the mishaps, there’s been many a conquered adventure.

FYBF - The Bucket List Edition

Climbed the Great Wall of China on a blistering cold Christmas Day (WTF were we thinking??!),.

Slept head to toe, squashed in a lodge with a bunch of strangers, to wake up at some ungodly hour to climb the rest of Mt Fuji and be rewarded by a magical sunrise.

Somehow managed to overcome vertigo when scuba diving 40 metres through deep blue, almost space like water in the Philippines to discover a far gone yet amazing ship wreck.

I have still yet to tell the twinions that in the pristine waters of Okinawa, Mama found Nemo.

But shouldn’t there be more?

The wonderful thing about bucket lists are the infinite possibilities.  It’s a free license to let you to dream big and crazy. Regardless of time, money and munchkins.

I figure with a birthday looming, now is as good as ever to undertake what would make my heart burst with high pumping adrenalin and my mind stay young and kooky.

As another ring grows around this tree, I share with you, my Bucket List.

FYBF - The Bucket List Edition 2

Life is short. But long enough for second chances and rectify regrets. Nor too late to make a whimsical request for a bit of Ryan Gosling-ness. Ahems.

Choosi are currently running a “What’s On Your Bucket List” competition where there’s a chance to win a $1000 prepaid Visa card.

Click here to enter and answer in 25 words or less:

“What’s the number one thing to do on your bucket list”

Complete additional steps to sharing the competition on social media and if you win, Choosi will DOUBLE the prize money to $2000.

FYBF – The Nutbush City Limits Edition

August 1, 2014 By: mamagrace7141 Comments

My gym schedule demands that it fits in approximately 480 minutes of weekly cardio exercise to get to my goal weight.

Of course, the reality is I’m lucky to reach half of that…

But apparently, it doesn’t all have to be “hard” cardio. I just have to be moving, walking, keeping the heart rate going.

Busting the moves totally counts.

Especially when it comes to Nutbush City Limits.

It’s edgier than the Chicken Dance but not as mainstream as the “YMCA.”

No one ever gets the Macarena right and well, let’s face it, Zumba’s not for everybody.

In the middle of the lounge room back in the mid 80’s, Grace the teenager tried emphatically to teach her father the steps.

“No, Dad, criss cross, criss cross…jump THEN clap!”

Finally mastering it hours later, he continued to adopt it as his staple boogie whenever required to get “jiggy wid it” at functions and parties.

During one particular Trivia Night, our team were at a high tension tie, with the determining question being, “What are the moves to Nutbush City Limits?”

I was there. Front, centre, leading the other befuddled members through the steps.

Needless to say, we won.

For all the bogan high school socials, the smoky, seedy dance floors at skanky night clubs and awkward moments dodging creepy Uncle Harry’s grasp of your behind at a wedding reception:

Nutbush City Limits, I salute you.

What’re your favourite moves on the dance floor? Do the older members of your family still get “jiggy wid it”? Are you part of the big Zumba movement?

And speaking of older members, it’s my Mama’s 80th today (Happy Birthday, Ma!) and let me tell you – she definitely still gets jiggy wid it…

FYBF – The Retro Edition

July 25, 2014 By: mamagrace7132 Comments

Bored, exhausted and desperate for company, a Mama of newborn twins started scouring the interwebz for inspiration.  Recipes or crafty tips didn’t do it for her.  Not even p*rn.

After much stalking, er, researching, she came across the “Australian Mummy Bloggers” website.

“Huh. What’s the blogging malarkey about?” she wondered skeptically.

Clicking here and there, she finally landed on a page that would significantly change her mummy life and open cyber doors that would eventually lead to a real life outside dirty nappies and projectile vomit.

There the Mama discovered a pocket rocket who wrote posts about vaginas for “funsies” and vlogged about a Dyson akin to a sex tape.  (But a classy one, of course…)

Who else can make vacuuming sensual?

“I need to meet this live wire,” the Mama thought.

And in a smoky, dark karaoke room, she finally met her (Titanic) match.

DPCON14

The rest, as they say…is bloggy history.

The years have rolled, #FYBF hostesses have changed several hands, blogs come and go and some get bigger than Ben Hur…but #FYBF remains strong and proud.

Today we go retro.

We return to that very first #FYBF post from the founder herself, the mostly cheeky, ever charming Brenda Gaddi…

Brenda Gaddi

I have started my own meme. Because I can. Hah.

Pardon the arseholish title. I am still a bit peeved about Echo not meeting my over-the-top expectations.

But……….

Fear not my darlings for I have just installed a new commenting system called DISQUS (pronounced as discuss, clever huh?). What?!?! I did say on my last post that I might install a new one. And, if you know me in real life. Might means 90% yes. So just play along. But, if this one goes all moodycow on us again. Then I’ll just exercise my power of delete, curse, delete, swear. Capiche?

Back to my meme.
Y’all know I am all about pimping promoting my blog. And of course your blog. Ahem. Also, I am always on the lookout for interesting blogs to follow and read. I always ALWAYS find the time to catch up on my blog reading. That’s not weird, right?

And so today I’d like to honour all the flagrant blog whores out there. I know I am not the only one. Yes, yes? Please join me in the very first dun dun dun FlogYoBlog Friday meme. *throws a shitload of confetti into the air*

Rules are fairly simple:
  • Follow my blog (this one is actually optional, you don’t have to if you don’t want to. Blog following is a personal thing. And if my blog is not your cup of tea then I’m totally cool with that. Seriously, I am. Just know that you are breaking my heart. Breaking my heart, you hear. Huhuhu.)
  • Grab my bubbly button (this one is required. Because, I have spent HOURS designing it. So please be so kind and post it on your lovely blog’s sidebar. Thankus.)
  • Link up your blog’s URL in the MckLinky malinky below. And if you want to put up the links on your blog, you are more than welcome to. Just follow the instructions on the linky thingy.
  • Take the time to check out the other linky-ers and go visit their blogs. Give them some blogluvin and follow them. Only if you want to. Just please follow at least one linky-er/blogger. Okay?
  • The list will be open for linky-ers from 8AM-12PM Sydney Time every Friday.
  • A new and fresh MckLinky list will open every friday. And you have to link up AGAIN. Because the previous link won’t carry over to the next week. Once the list is closed, it’s closed. Got it?
  • And lastly, have lotsa fun!
  • And ooh, invite your bloggy friends to participate.

FYBF – The Name That Tune Edition

July 18, 2014 By: mamagrace7134 Comments

Following last week’s discussion on songs and the ones that leave powerful, emotional memories, I had this mad idea to play the guitar and sing my version of a current hit.

Mad because, I haven’t taken a guitar lesson since the 4th grade.  Even madder still because the only songs I can actually play are “Kumbaya” and “Michael Row Your Boat Ashore”

So in the better interest of not making a complete dill of myself and protecting your hearing, I’ll be parking that project for a while until I teach myself some more guitar chords (preferably the ones for the song in question) and when the tips of my fingers toughen up.  Ouchie…*big sulky pout*

Of course there’s one instrument that doesn’t hurt my fingers.  No, not that one…Ahems.

For this week’s FYBF we’re going to play a game called “Name That Tune”

FYBF Name That Tune

For your leisure and entertainment, I have specially picked 3 songs for you to guess.

Watch the vlog and guess the songs I’m playing.

Your answers have to have both the song title AND artist/band/movie it came from). Feel free to get creative in delivering your answers, ‘k? I’m a sucker for funny.

Email them to: grace@withsomegrace.com

The lucky winner will be receiving a little something’ from moi!

Good luck! And look forward to seeing your “Soundtrack of Life” posts!

FYBF – The Soundtrack of Life Edition

July 11, 2014 By: mamagrace7144 Comments

As it is with many others, music has played a huge part in life for as long as I can remember.

The Soundtrack of Life 2

While my late nanny, Bibi Koya remembers my brothers as fussy eaters, her biggest memory of me is a non-stop dancing and singing toddler.

Not much has changed, especially in a Karaoke studio.  Ahems.

There’s also the songs that define certain chapters of our lives.

Not necessarily one that acquires our personal taste but somehow synchronicity transforms a certain melody into a life long memory.

Voila! It becomes part of the soundtrack of life.

I have a tonne of these ditties. Some stuck in my head cushioned with a whole load of loving nostalgia. Others I wish there was a brick wall to beat them out.  (Thank you, Thomas and his friends)

I’ve nailed it down to 3.  Not sure how  I managed such a harsh cull but here they are:

Got To Be Real by Cheryl Lynn

Having an older brother who was a big disco goer, I grew up around a LOT of funky 70’s music and this song was no exception.

Then, it did another round of success when Sex And The City featured it in that classic episode where Carrie trips on the runway.  Besides being hilarious, there was a poignant message there about bravery and staying true to yourself.

“When real people fall down in life, they get up and keep on walking”

It stuck with me like it was dying to be part of my life in some significant way or another.

So, it seemed like the natural choice to have it for our bridal waltz.

The band we hired rehearsed it for weeks and in the meantime, we took ballroom dancing classes and came up with moves that would send John Travolta to shame

FYBF - The Soundtrack of Life Edition

Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson

The birth of the twinions was planned meticulously by my obstetrician.

Due to be born 5 weeks early, a c-section was scheduled and wow, what a performance it was! There were at least 8 staff in that operating theatre, not including the overwhelmed medical student in the corner who kept giving me shifty looks.  Luckily I was too drugged out to care.

Apparently, music in the theatre had just been allowed so one of the younger staff members brought in their brother’s iPod.  Deciding that The Ministry of Sound playlist was probably inappropriate, we unanimously agreed on Jack Johnson.  Which was a much better idea. I heart Jack.

“But just maybe, like a ukelele, Momma made a baby” (or two)

FYBF - The Soundtrack of Life Edition 2

Fernando by ABBA

In a new country, new climate with no friends or family, Australia was a very scary place.

But it was the mid 70’s and the entire world was swept by ABBA.

We arrived from the tropics of Indonesia to the dead of Canberra winter. (Talk about lousy timing).  I remember my mother sitting in our cold kitchen and humming Fernando while cooking Indonesian spring rolls to sell as a bit of pocket money as she was looking for permanent work.

“They were shining there for you and me, for liberty, Fernando”

As the ABBA hit stayed #1 in the Australian charts for 14 weeks, the same time we slowly settled into our new lives, filling it with opportunities, good, clean food and water with backyards where we could grow our own apple trees. Imagine that. Our own apple trees.

FYBF - The Soundtrack of Life Edition

(And that’s about as topless as you’ll ever see me).

What are the songs that make the soundtrack to your life?

Tell me or better yet, write a post about it! I’m always looking for new songs to love. Link it to next week’s #FYBF

2. Sign up to the awesome Digital Parents community ( if you haven’t already done so). DP was created by Brenda Gaddi who happens to be the creator of FYBF. She’s also created 4 gorgeous kidlets. In case you’d like to know. Or maybe not. But we’ll share that info just the same.

3. Add your post URL to the FYBF linky. Please only link up one post.

4. Grab the funky FYBF button and post it on your sidebar. Help spread the blogfloggin love.

5. Visit the blogs of your fellow FYBF’ers and share the comment love

About Me…

Indonesian-born, Grace spent extensive time living and working overseas, primarily in Japan. She now resides in Sydney where she is mum to identical twin boys and wife to an avid surfer. While she has happily replaced office life with motherhood, Grace has discovered that a 10 year career in corporate sales and being fluent in 3 languages is futile when dealing with toddler tantrums and singing “The Wheels On The Bus”
