Please welcome Kim from Falling Face First! I’ve been stalking her blog for several months now because well, she’s just bloody funny and being a mum hasn’t stopped her from living on the edge. Or at least wanting to 🙂 I had the pleasure of finally meeting her at a DP Drinks catch up in February.
How ironic that while walking to the train station together, it was I who happened to trip, roll my ankle and almost fall face first. After recovering from the sharp pain, I just knew then I wanted Kim as on board as a FYBF Featured Flogger!
Feel free to stalk her via Twitter or Facebook. She’ll love you for it!
A letter to myself – before children (BC me)
Dude! Please, do not ever let me hear you say you’re bored again. Future you will put ‘bored’ in the category of ‘good day’ words. Read more books, quickly. See movies. Also see the future movies that haven’t yet been made, since future you won’t have time to see them. Then you’ll at least be able to smile and nod when someone quotes a seminal movie line like ‘I love lamp’.* (Yes, I will remain highbrow, even in the future when I’m grown up).
Stop standing up when you eat. What are you, a horse? You’ll be doing it for a living later (yes, yes, you’re not infertile and will breed two lovely girls. You’ll be eating breakfast and lunch in the kitchen while said lovely girls pull on your clothes for impossible things). So SIT. DOWN.
Travel. I know you are now, and you will have the chance again, but try some slightly harder places. Climb to Machu Picchu, see the Moai statues in Easter Island, ski in Japan, and go spice mad in Marrakech. There is so much to see and such rich and amazing culture to experience. One day you’ll be trying to learn about it all through SBS and it’s not enough.
Don’t worry so much about your peer group. This will sound bad, but, umm … why don’t you try on a few more hats? You will be wearing the hat you marry for a long time. That long-term thing you do? Stop! Immediately!
A few more words of advice from future me to you, in brief: don’t think so hard, don’t work so hard, definitely play too hard, exercise a lot (and your body will and does thank you later), and smile whenever you can, knowing you have two beautiful girls coming along to change your life forever.
Also – in March 2013 you will have a cold. Try and take some echinacea in February 2012. Ok? Thanks. Mwah.

I think I’d like to have a go at this – what would I tell myself? Don’t know about the plenty of hats, I think I tried enough and am very happy with the one I landed for life 🙂

Hi Becc! I’d love to hear what you’d have to tell your before children Becc! It’s a fun exercise 🙂

I can see why you picked Kim’s blog to feature, Grace.
I currently have a friend who just got hitched and is honeymooning in Marrakesh and another who just got back from walking the Inca trail. (No kids of course).
I soak up all their photos and stories, wistfully daydream and then get sucked back to reality by the ‘Mommmy’ cries over porridge.

Kim @Fallling Face First says
Oh Kirri, that would kill me! At least most of my friends are similarly anchored in porridge at the moment. Although, vicarious travel is pretty good too. One day… I’m not giving up. We’ll get there!
Vicki @ Knocked Up & Abroad says
Loved this. Made me definitely think about all the things I would want to tell myself and ultimately would probably ignore and think nah, plenty of time for that or how bad can parenting really be? Surely I’ll have time to pop to have a pedicure when I need it 😉
Kim @Fallling Face First says
Thanks Vicki. So true! I was similarly deluded. Now my toes stay painted the same colour for about 3 weeks. And my kids do them. 🙂
Lara @ This Charming Mum says
I’m sure past-Kim would be very proud of future-Kim but I do know what you’re saying. I did a lot of travel BC too, but it’s never enough. I can’t see me getting to Marrakech now unless it’s on a Seniors Bus Tour once my own kids are off backpacking Europe somewhere 🙂
Kim @Fallling Face First says
Aww thanks Lara. I’ll make you a deal. We’ll pack our kids off on some horrible Contiki thing when they’re 19 and we’ll go do a Thelma and Louise in Marrakech. I’m driving. 🙂

Super picking, Grace 🙂 and it’s very wonderful to meet you Kim.
I so wish I’d done more travel too … sigh .. one day … thud … reality!
Have a great Easter weekend xx

Took me a moment to get the hat thing – I’m clearly very literal.
Tho I did get I love lamp straight away…clearly very mature.

HA Lydia – I’m picturing myself married to a hat and lying next to him in bed. Very romantic. He is a bowler hat I think? Thank goodness somebody matches my level of maturity. We need to talk movies. I hope you’ve watched Hot Tub Time Machine. It has John Cusack and time travel and is very, very stupid.

Ha Ha Kim, I would also suggest you tell yourself to buy shares in coffee, chocolate and BOOZE! I agree with all of those things 🙂 Happy Easter funny girl
