This is a little belated but I want to say a big thanks for all the well wishes from my day surgery a couple of weeks ago.
I had delayed my hysteroscopy polypectomy (Try saying that 10 times real quick) for almost a year.
Despite being told it was a routine procedure and my polyps were indeed benign, I was terrified.
Never having been under general anesthesia, the thought of forced unconsciousness was too much.
Even when my husband told me that going under guaranteed him of the best sleep ever…I just couldn’t bring myself to go there.
Yet, I was dealing with a very persistent and luckily for me, understanding obgyn who kept following up.
“Grace, gotta get it done. Grace, we’ll have to shred your consent form if you don’t book in within the next three months”
Ugh.
Now it’s done, it was like ripping off a band aid except it wasn’t.
What I did discover was:
- Day surgery is just like a busy cafe. You check in at the admissions desk then given a blue pager device – just like the ones you get after placing a food order. But instead of getting a big bowl of nachos with extra cheese, you’re sent to the patient lounge for more uncomfortable waiting.
- No matter how cool they were in the 80’s, orange floor socks have no place in 2016.
- Disposable undies have no front or back. They sit weird at any angle.
- When it’s time to go under, anaesthetists administer what they fondly call “IV Champagne”.
- Anything with the word ‘champagne’ calms me right the feck down.
- Within three seconds of having said IV Champagne injected, being told to ‘shuffle over’ from the hospital gurney to the operating table is harder than any half marathon I’ve EVER done.
- That sometime during the procedure my cha-cha down there somehow managed to get a nice little trim.
The procedure happened on a Friday afternoon so luckily I had the weekend to get over the wooziness.
And since then, I’ve spoken to a couple of ladies who have also been delaying certain procedures for lady parts.
All I can say is, I totes get it. Because it’s not an urgent situ, it’s so easy to keep holding it off.
Just don’t be a dumb ass wuss like me who was scared but then had it unnecessarily fester in my head for almost a year.
Get it done. Then you can be done with it.
Have you gone under? Was it the best sleep you’ve ever had? How weird are disposable undies?

LOL. Yep, all that …
I love a good General Anesthetic induced sleep. There should be more of them …

My middle daughter had to be put under general anasthetic last year and she was treated like a little princess. It certainly helped with her procedure!
Great advice about overcoming your fear/worry and just doing it!
Lol, it’s been a while but I remember that cocktail very well. Glad it’s over for you!

I’d have to get it done straight away to make sure it wasn’t something terrrible lurking – that fear would beat the ‘operation’ fear…sometimes fear can help! Glad it was all good news in the end…

So glad all was well for you Grace. I am well versed in day surgery this year, though I did score sleepovers both times. It’s a fascinating performance to be a part of. I really enjoy those fee drug induced moments you get before you fall asleep. So much fun in the most horrific way!

I mean ‘few.’ Why do comment forms act like they are on drugs too?

I’m pleased it’s all over red rover! I’m a big fan of that deep sleep, the grogginess afterwards? Not so much! When it comes to dodgy innards, experience has taught me that it’s better out than in and when it comes to surgery I’m a keen bean! I didn’t get to wear any orange socks though. I want to be a member of the Orange Socks Club!

I’m glad your op is successfully over and done with now! I must be stuck in the 80s as I don’t mind your orange socks!

I’ve been under a few times, most notably when I was about 8 to have my adenoids out. Before it all kicked off, I opened my eyes on the operating table, saw the surgeon and said “Hello Dr Haines” – which freaked them all out, they gave me more gas and out I went. Home later that day and was promised spaghetti bolognese (my favourite) for dinner. Went off for a lie-down, woke up and came out anticipating my tea to find out it was the next day! Disappointed!!

Oh I love a champers IV drop – might try that one myself.heheh. I think you are wrong about the bright orange socks – noice but different.

I had a similar op about a year ago, except I didn’t know mine were benign until AFTER the procedure… but yes one should not delay such things. Aren’t those knickers just the best! 😉

Thanks for the IV champagne reminder, makes it seem so much easier, glad it all went well.
Such a good reminder for all us scardy cats, just to get stuff done. Have a good weekend lovely. x

Yikes…I never think of a GA as a good sleep. I have had more than I can count thanks to various ‘woman-based’ surgeries, abdo and hand surgeries. I think staying in the hospital is hard. At least with day surgery you get to come home. Glad you went well. And I so agree, DO NOT put off this kind of surgery. ‘kay!

Oh Grace, you poor thing. I have gone under general anaesthetic heaps of times, so I get blasé about it. Must remember to be more sympathetic to friends going under for the first time. I’m allergic to general so I actually get more worked up about the reaction I know I’m going to have when I wake up! Which is ridiculous – what’s a manageable allergic reaction compared to having a neurosurgeon tinker with your knowledge centre?! Oh well. That’s how my brain works. (For now. Ha. Sorry. Couldn’t help myself.)
So glad it all went well and that you’re okay. x

I’m allergic to morphine, and take fricking hours to wake up from surgery. I can empathise.
I don’t find it at all restful, funnily enough! 😂

I’m on a waiting list for a hysteroscopy at the moment and I’m not really looking forward to it. I’m petrified of being put to sleep even though when I had my colonoscopy it really did feel like the best sleep I’d ever had. I swore i’d been asleep for a solid 8 hours but it was only an hour and a half. Still shatting my pants about surgery though. Good on you for getting it over and done with.

It is the anesthetic pain that I don’t like afterwards. It always creeps into my shoulder and I have continually rub it to make it go away. I wish you a quick recovery, but be kind to yourself because it takes time to recover after surgery. As I get older it takes longer and longer.

I have just posted a very similar story. Except I had to get a new referral letter. And by delaying my colonoscopy polypectomy, I’ve affected my health directly. I have just been diagnosed with very low iron levels, most likely caused by the polyps.
This is even more stupid because my polyps are precancerous.
So I’ve booked myself in week after next, in my birthday week.
Just day surgery for me. I think it’s even twilight sedation. If I see any sparkly vampires or handsome wild boys, I’ll let you know.

I’ve had a few surgeries under my belt now and I’m more comfortable with them than I used to be. I know I’m more comfortable undergoing surgery myself than watching my kids go through it – it wasn’t easy supporting my daughter through her broken arm surgery last weekend! I hope all is good for you now x

Glad to hear it all went well Grace. I’m not a fan of hospitals or surgery either so can totally understand where you are coming from. I always feel nauseous after having a GA which I think worries me more than having the anesthetic itself. Although I think watching one of my girls being put under GA was much worse, for me not her.
