My oh my, whatta week in Australian politics!
Even if you tried to bury your head deep in the sand of ignorance (it’s always bliss there, I hear), you couldn’t escape the whirlwind merry-go-round ride that took us back to where it all started…KRuddsville.
And despite what people may think of her, I take my hat of to our ex Prime Minister. It made me proud to see a female leader of our country during my generation.
I do hope however, that despite her resignation and plans to leave politics, we don’t let the appalling behavior that she encountered during her Prime Ministership be swept under the carpet of oblivion.
The disrespectful comments from shock jocks, the vilification from the opposition; let’s remember it all because ignoring it leaves the door dangerously open for it – the bullying and sexism – to repeat itself and become the norm in our society.
Okay, off my slippery soap box.
Moving away from the political kind, let’s talk about another kind of party!

I’m so disgusted with how Julia was treated, no respect! As you say Grace, whether we like her policies or not, she was still our Prime Minister.
Sounds like your party will be fabulous, wish I was closer xx

I’m definitely one who can admire her for her strengths. I don’t care what you think of a person, everyone has the right to be treated with basic respect.
It’s a shame so many can ignore the positives at times like this.
Shall check my schedule and see if I can find a jet to borrow in time for the par-te shall I? 😉

How I would love to be there for drinky poos, which would end up messy and me being way too chatty! Appalling the way the PM was analysed, as a woman foremost. She can leave with her head held high, she handled it like a champion 🙂

YAY bloggy drinks!!! I was all set to say something intelligent (COUGH not – it’s not yet 7am!!) about Julia Gillard when you got me ALL EXCITED about the next bloggy drinks. I absolutely agree though. Parties aside, politics aside, she was PM, and a PERSON, (in the top office at that), and deserved our respect. Her treatment made me feel sick. She really has been such a role model for women.
Nice work Grace, Kev and Danielle. Can you promise to sprain your ankle again please Grace, so I don’t have to? 😉 And WHADDYA MEAN, no karaoke?????? xx

Whether you liked her or not, there can be no denying that she was treated appallingly from the very beginning, for no other fact than that she was a woman. Shame on every single Australian who called her a ‘Ranga’, who questioned her lack of children, who questioned her partner’s sexuality (seriously??), who said disgraceful things when her father died and the list goes on. Not a single one of those would have been said had she been male. We can do better, and we MUST do better.
(Though I have to say, while I feel really sorry for her, and am not the huge Rudd fan anymore that I was, there is some nice symmetry)

I was shocked by the week’s events. I personally like Julia. She’s smart and sassy. And she endured a lot of BS. This country really needs an over haul of how politics is run, and how politicians and the media behave. How will we ever sort out the real issues? Back to the sand for me. X
Lara @ This Charming Mum says
Ooh, jealous! Wish I lived in Sydney. Thanks for sharing happy blogger news after such a crazy week. I’m not a fan of everything Julia has done during her term, but I do think she faced huge additional challenges due to her gender which is a sad reflection on the plight of women in public life in Australia. I hope it is easier for the next woman to tread that path.

You know, I really feel for Julia. I think she was a patsy for the party in the beginning. I doubted it was her idea to overthrow her friend, Kevin, in the first place…. and now, a patsy again. Taking the fall.
Kevin will have a hard time showing that all the bagging his party did to justify throwing him out overnight, has changed.
They are such a circus…. and the other choice?
Urghhhh.
I’d rather herpes than Abbott.

Whatever happened to respecting those in authority? The way we think we can treat our leaders is appalling, but then, the way they treat each other does not give us a great example.

You know I gotta say it was Kevin who was back stabbed first and quite frankly I was mortified then and am now, but maybe it’s Karma… however, I think she did a good job against all the odds. In saying that, it’s all the backbenchers that pull the strings, the PM is just the face. As for the Sydney party, wish I could be there! 🙂

Yeah, sorry, have to say that what Kevin did to Julia was not exactly different to what was already done to him by her and both times each persona said it ‘was for the good of the party’. Bit of a shamozzle but backstabbing aside, I much prefer the Ruddster! x

It is just appalling the way she was treated. I too am glad that I lived in a world where we had a female Prime Minister, especially since I am the mother of daughters. Lovely to have that role model for them, or rather a prime example that women can do anything if they really want to.

I too am appalled and disappointed as to where Australia is at with regards to sexism and downright misogyny. My only hope is that Kevin comes through by both winning the election, addressing marriage inequality and developing a compassionate response to how Australia manages asylum seekers.
One can only hope. xx

I do agree the way Julia has been treated is absolutely appalling. If she was a man I doubt that she would have been treated that way. What kind of message does it send to young people if the men who are leaders in this country and men in the media are happy to treat a woman like this, just because she is a woman?
I have really enjoyed FYBF this week (as always) and have added a number of new blogs to my reading list!

I just really hope the next female who wants to head into politics or take a leadership role is not deterred by the abhorrent behaviour of men in power. I think a lot of our problems would be solved if we got rid or those types of people and had men and women who knew what it was to be respectful.

I LOVE this post Grace!!
Whether you voted for her or not, like her or not she was our Prime Minister and this shbould come with great respect, how she was treated put Australia to shame.
I fear that this could put women off entering politics, it made it all look like a big boys only club and if you dare to enter as a women look out -your opening yourself up to humiliation and despicable behaviour and the boys they don’t want you up there.
I so admire her dignity and strength.

Agreed re: Julia’s treatment. There is a level of respect she should have been afforded based on her office, which wasn’t in evidence, due in large par to a hostile media. Gonski, NDIS, NBN… there are a lot of achievements. And her concession speech was a gem. No blubbering for Jules. Now my daughter knows she can be PM… if she wants to.

Very well said, and some great comments. It is such a shame that sexism is so close to the surface still in Australia, and so is racism. But I also think it comes down to an erosion of respect in general. Lots of room for improvement….kathy
