After 25 years of faithful service, the beloved Sydney monorail will close at the end of this month.
I’m particularly sad because it’s been the perfect baby sitter.
Riding the “bullet train” (as the twinlets call it) is a city visit highlight. We stay on for ages, riding loop after loop after loop, letting Mr Surfer and I catch a break.
The moment we board, the boys bounce off the walls with excitement and annoy other passengers in the carriage. Hey, I plead ignorance.
So goodbye, Sydney monorail. Thanks for being the perfect distraction for every wild tantrum. For making those mundane afternoons, when dangerously close to witching hour, a lot less painful. Thank you for the wonderful, happy family memories.

My boy will be very sad – a ride on the monorail has a been a favourite activity! Must remember to go for a last ride!

Oh, so sad. I loved it when we went on outings to the city as a kid and travelled on this!

Oh no! I remember being taken on that as a tourist the first time I went to Sydney. That’s a shame, great views up there.

Wow, I didn’t realise it was going. So great that your boys got to ride on it. I’m sure you’ll show them pics of it one day and tell them all about it. 🙂

Public transport is the best for baby sitting! I do the same with the bus route that goes down to the beach with DS is being particularly horrifying.

How have I managed to miss this amazing baby sitting opportunity???? We’re not ridden it once – I think we’ll have to head up to asap before it’s gone forever!! x

I’ve never taken kids on it, but when I lived there I used it a few times. The end of an era huh x

Oh how cute are your little ones!! I have seen that the MonoRail was closing at the end of June – maybe if they made it cheaper for large families to travel on it then more people would be using it, and they would be making more money to be able to keep it open.
I wanted to take our family on it a few times but with 2 adults and 3 Kids I thought the cost was too much!!!
But I never thought about how David and I could catch some time together while the little ones were busy 🙂 Like your idea!

My boys loved riding the Monorail too – it took a while to bribe them off once.
Thanks for linking up .

Thanks for the reminder, we’ll have to go, too, maybe this weekend. My kids will be very upset if they find it gone one day without having said Goodbye

My mum made us march against the Monorail when it was first proposed. We still have a ‘keep rides in Luna Park’ badge somewhere. Mum has not been on it once! I’ve tried to get her to go on it now it’s coming down but she flatly refuses. My girlfriends and me used to pay the $2 fair and go round and round in it, stopping off at Arizona Bar on Pitt Street for a few beers, games of pool and a go on the cardies.
Personally, I don’t care either way that it is going. If it will save the State some money, then good get rid of it. It was never a great means of transport for locals. Just a joyride for tourists.

How do they close down a monorail?! That’s ridiculous they can’t find funding to continue it – you know how long it takes to build a monorail track? Well, neither do I….but still it’s ridiculous.

I cant say I have been on it for quite some time but I do have fond memories 🙂

We went for a spin on Tuesday! It was only my second time, I hadn’t been on it since it opened, but figured we should go on it again before it stops running…

Very sad to see the monorail go! it was a great way to see darling harbour. Lets hope they can implement another form of transport like this so all of us and tourists can enjoy!
