This post is brought to you by The Kitchen Place. All opinions are mine. All DIY disasters mentioned are also real, unfortunately.
First and foremost, this post is not a bash at Mr Surfer. He will be the first to agree with me that working on home renovations is not his strong point.
This little home of ours is full of love and DIY disasters.
When baby proofing the house, my husband had second thoughts to where he should stick a 3D hook. Thinking that it would just be like moving a post-it note, he ended up ripping out a chunk of wall instead.
My husband has a tendency to become stoic over a range of hardships, including home improvement projects.
There seems to be difficulty in admitting that some jobs, well MOST jobs are best left to the professionals.
In hindsight, I should’ve known way back when we were still just dating.
As Mr Surfer mulled and debated over the Ikea instructions of the new bookshelf I had bought for my apartment, I could sense something wasn’t quite right.
Maybe it was the extra sweat on his brow or the awkward silence each time he picked up the allan key.
Many delayed hours later, the bookshelf was finally erected with the same dramatic climax to the barn raising scene of “Witness”.
Unfortunately, the excitement was short lived when Mr Surfer realized he had assembled the top panel the wrong way around.
People dream about their dream car, houses or even kitchens.
I have fantasies about the perfect bookshelf.
In 5 years of blissful marriage and countless bodgy home repairs job later, we now have a basic, unspoken rule.
Depending on how complex the job is (not very) and how many attempts he’s made (COUNTLESS), then it’s time to call the big guns.
The Kitchen Place are experts in custom made kitchens but also laundries and bathrooms.
Eager to spread their knowledge and experience, they also hold Kitchen Design Seminars in their Hawthorn, Melbourne kitchen showroom.
Passionate about cabinetry, I also found my dream bookshelf while looking through their stunning photo gallery.
The great thing about dreams? Is they can become a reality. Eventually.
I know my beloved husband would love to win Handy Man of the Year but we need to save ourselves from further headaches and wrecked walls. So when this bookshelf of mine
Mr Surfer is still a wonderful husband and an awesome dad.
Just don’t give him an electric drill. Or a 3D Hook.
What’s been the biggest DIY disaster at your place? At what stage have the professionals had to intervene?

Yes can relate to this. How good does that book shelf look.?!

Yes, I’m hearing you Grace. I’m terrible with DIY and have had my share of disasters too. (I had a good laugh at that line about the barn raising scene in Witness…I think I remember that moment.) Luckily, I have plenty of friends and family that are wonders on the tools and, let’s just say, I have them on speed dial!

We’ve never really attempted any big DIY things. Boatman is pretty good with simple things, and even I enjoy putting together IKEA furniture.
I don’t think we would ever attempt to do a house reno though. It would be like the opposite of The Block if we did.

Anything that has to do with water or electricity, we hire a pro because fixing a light switch just isn’t worth dying over!

Im the one that changes the light globes and Im pretty sure my husband (who is awesome by the way) doesn’t know where the meter box is, let alone what it houses. In light of this, we out source EVERYTHING! so much cheaper and less arguing in the long run!
Hello from #teamIBOT
Lol. Oh no! Well my husband is a carpenter, so we’re pretty safe. My Dad is a whole other story though. Dave has had to fix up numerous bodge jobs done by dear old Dad. Oh and my brother too. Absolute shocker. Lucky Dave is happy to help 🙂

I have a ridiculously handy hubby but I’m not sure it’s any better. He’s such a perfectionist that everything has to be almost perfect so if it can’t be done a certain way it doesn’t get done! Lucky we think they’re hot! xx
Damn lucky, Em!! 😉
I really don’t get why men have such big egos when it comes to handyman stuff. They seem to think it is their god given right to know how to do it then get pissed off when they get it wrong. Bah – call in the pros!

In the same way I wouldn’t drill for oil to fill my car, I figure I’ll get the people who know what they’re doing to fix things….

My hubby (Mr Fix It no less!) is definitely a handyman. He’s totally clever at making and fixing stuff but it takes a long time when he’s doing something he hasn’t done before and he is also a perfectionist. Unless it’s a pet project of his (e.g. the shed or the paving) we get in a professional. Time is way too valuable.

Oh LOL! I love a good DIY disaster. I am dreadful at all things DIY but my husband is brilliant at it! He installed our kitchen and laundry all by himself at the last house, among other things. It’s so awesome having someone who knows how to fix things. I’m the thinker. He’s the do-er!
