Last Friday afternoon, we found this little fella sitting on the curb.
We think it had fallen out of this tree.
And while its mother was flying around, she didn’t come to collect her little one and we couldn’t see where the nest was.
Finding a little shoe box, we filled up with some leaves and twigs and took it to our local vet.
But before we dropped it off, the boys wanted to say goodbye and wish it well.
If you’re in NSW and find injured wildlife but can’t get through to a vet, remember you can also call WIRES (NSW Wildlife, Information, Rescue and Education Services) on 13 000 WIRES or 13 00 094 737.

Naw, what a little cutie. It’s always sad when that happens, hope it was ok in the end. I remember when I was little we found an abandoned baby magpie at the park with Grandma and we took it home and feed him some water from a syringe until Grandpa got home and could take him to the vet. It was the best afternoon, looking after the little thing.

Poor little thing. Hope it found a nice home. (Though it looks suspiciously like a mynah bird in the pic, in which case I’m afraid I don’t wish it quite so well…)

I have fond memories of doing this as a kid. Your boys will now have it cataloged in their minds forever as well.

This is good to know.We dound a bird the other day and went to get a box. By the time we got back, the bird was gone… I hope someone else has picked it up. I had no idea what to do with it anyway, so now I’ll know.

Sweet. I hope he/she makes it. I found one similar when my daughter was a baby. My heart went out to it. I raced it home, shoe-boxed it and took it to my cash-strapped musician neighbour asking if he could catch a taxi to the vet as I was going to work. He did. But I think the chick missed its mum too much. π
I think it’s really important though to show compassion for our furry and feathered friends who have to share our big cities.

Well done and great lesson on try and help out if you can. I can’t help thinking that my 2.5yo would have put the lid on the box and shaken it though.

Oh bless how sweet are you. I on the other hand have a bird phobia and I especially hate myna birds and magpies and wouldnt you know 5 of the darn things have taken up residence in my backyard. I have been madly googling solutions to my problem. Currently Maksi try’s to scare them away by saying “go way birdy” so far we have had little to no success x
Awww. We just took a juvenile possum to a WIRES vet the other day too.

You’re a good mom. Seriously. That picture of the twins looking at baby bird is sweet. π

That’s amazing that you even thought of taking it to the vet, much less know where to call if there’s no vet available. Then again, we don’t get much life wilder than the alcoholic couple next door.

That’s one lucky little guy. So glad you found it before a larger animal did!
