FYBF – Mr Surfer Sushi Iron Chef

FYBF - Mr Surfer Sushi Iron Chef

Coming up to our third date, Surfer Boyfriend sent a text while I was at work one blah afternoon:

“How about dinner at my house tonight?”

Getting serious with dating on school night, I was even more thrilled by the prospect of my new boyfriend cooking ME dinner. Woohoo!

“I’ll pick you up and then we can go grocery shopping,” he wrote.

A man who took charge. I liked that.

Only for it to be short lived.

Arriving at Coles, he turns to me as we hit the vegetable aisle, “So, whaddaya going to cook for dinner tonight?”

“Er, hello? What?”

“Well, I can only make one thing – lemon meringue pie.”

The cheeky bugger cleverly implied that, sure, there will be dinner. And of course, it will be at his house. He just WON’T be the one making it. Unless I wanted pie.

So, I did what any respectable young woman who was put on the spot did.

I made him the spiciest chicken stir fry. Ever.

Subsequently giving him nonstop hiccups. Oops.

Since that fateful cook up, Mr Surfer has mastered many a simple, quick dinner – spaghetti Bolognese, his own version of a chicken stir fry (no spices, of course).

Is it then pure coincidence that a week shy of our 6th wedding anniversary – symbolized with IRON – my beloved was secretly honing in on his own IRON CHEF skills?

And before I could say salmon skin roll, I was served with homemade sushi, painstakingly made with love, an integral bamboo mat and tea towel wrapped around his head.

“Tadah! Sushi – Aussie Style!”

Why he thought I needed an entire tube of wasabi, is beyond me. Maybe he was paying me back for his hiccup episode?

FYBF - Mr Surfer Sushi Iron Chef 3

Happy 6th wedding anniversary, Mr Surfer!

Who needs wasabi? You’ll always be hot to me.

Any gift suggestions for the 6th “iron” wedding anniversary? Does spicy food give you the hiccups? Ever mistaken wasabi for pistachio ice cream?

    Aww! That’s cute.
I didn’t know what Wasabi was. I thought it was avocado. So I piled it on because I LOVE avocado. I nearly died. Right there in the shopping centre outside the sushi store at Noosa Junction. It went up the back of my nose and directly to my sinus. Hells bells. There tears …
I have no idea what to by for an iron birthday other than a voucher for an ironing service?

Had a bad experience with wasabi years ago when I thought it was some delightful, smooth sauce to go with my meal. Green should be cool-tasting after all?
    Happy Anniversary to you both!

Happy Anniversary – and too cute! My partner can make sushi (well, he’s the cook, I’m the surfer chef in this story…but I can’t make lemon merangue pie either – or spell it apparently) I’m impressed with the patience of sushi chefs….

Happy anniversary Grace! So lovely that Mr. Surfer went to the trouble to make you sushi.
The first meal John ever made me was steamed omelette with scallops and oyster sauce, and I knew he was a keeper.

That’s so sweet he went to cooking school to learn how to make something other than Lemon Meringue Pie.
My man has made spaghetti Bolonaise on most Saturday nights for 10 years – on occasion he mixes it up and does a simple seafood spag dish.
