First to freely admit that I was far from being a Star Trek fan, the news of Leonard Nimoy still came as a shock and met with sadness.
He was just one of those celebrities who was “always around”, you know?
Maybe the portrayal of a half Vulcan and half human sci fi character immortalized him.
Then Sheldon and pals helped raise Mr Nimoy’s profile all over again.
Even I secretly want a Star Trek Transporter toy…
It’s never too late to become a fan.
So immersed would Nimoy be in his character as the calm, rational, emotion suppressing Dr Spock, it would take him an entire weekend to recalibrate back to “himself”.
He would then head back to the studio the following Monday morning to shoot the next episode and start the cycle of Vulcan/human behaviour all over again.
The continuing battle to make decisions based on pure logic and simultaneously figuring out how to register and manage human emotions.
I’ve been trying to radio silence myself from social media this week.
It’s the exposure to vitriol and heartless opinions that I want to avoid.
People just seem to love busting on others’ belief systems.
Maybe we’re all trying to prove there’s a bit of Vulcan in us – seeing “what makes sense”, clinically but coldly.
Claim that a situation is “black and white”.
“It is what it is”
But when has that EVER been the case?
Every aspect of my life – the good, the bad, the devastating – all of it has surfaced in various Pantone shades of plot twisted emotion.
All of it though has its rightful place. A precious place.
Even in his last Tweet, Spock knew it too.
Just as we can’t take our own lives for granted, what about giving others the chance to do the same?

I’ve never watched Star Trek, but Nimoy sounds like a pretty wise bloke. I’ve struggled this week too. So much nastiness and sadness around. Sometimes it’s better to just take a break from it all and unplug xxx #istandformercy

Love this post even though I’m not a trekkie. It is a very yin-yang message – we can’t have rational thinking without emotion, and we can’t expect to live our lives the way we want to, in our own garden, unless we let others grow in theirs. Love the pantone shades of life, nothing is black and white. And #istandformercy too.

Well said Kathy and Grace I think this ‘many shades of grey’ world coupled with so many personal circumstances can make the online world so difficult at times. In often only a few words people try to get their views heard and some in a not so rational way! Tis good to sometimes take a break xx

Sometimes just switching it all off to get some peace and quiet is what is needed. I love your expression – all the pantone shades.

Life is like a garden. Beautiful.
Opinions have been rife lately. People seem content with ending these young lives because of a mistake a decade ago, the laws of that country blah blah. What if an Australian woman broke the laws of a middle eastern country by kissing a boy? Would that be an acceptable reason to kill her? That excuse doesn’t hold up with me. It is not fair. They should send them home to serve out their sentences.
I’m with you, G. X

It was very sad to hear the news about Leonard Nimoy- I follow George Takei on fb and read lots of nice tributes.
I find many people defend their ideas with “Well, it’s MY OPINION and I have a RIGHT to an opinion!” and quite often, that’s the only defense they have for clinging to outdated or offensive notions that should have been well and truly abandoned by now. It’s always a good idea to unplug from that!

I stand for mercy. I feel sick thinking about what is going on. It’s a horrible feeling to be so helpless and I can only imagine how the families feel. I love the garden analogy Grace. Very apt x

I can’t say I was ever a huge Star Trek fan, but really loved seeing Leonard on BBT. To me, he always seemed like such a gentle person.
And I really can’t help but think that mercy has been pushed aside in a display of power. So terribly sad for those families, I can’t even imagine their prolonged grief.
The WWW has been a sad place this week, Grace xx

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Leonard. That last tweet of his is a beautiful quote. #Istandformercy too Grace I am sick to the stomach with the latest movements in Bali. I cannot bare to watch the news. It is wrong. So wrong. With regards to the hatred and online bullying that is so vile and damaging, I fully support the new movement by Alli & Co #banishthebully xoxo
