FYBF Featured Flogger – Kim from Spirited Mama

June 21, 2013 By: mamagrace7164 Comments

Our next FYBF Featured Flogger is a lovely lady whose blog I discovered last year.  I finally had the opportunity to meet Kim of Spirited Mama in person at DPCON13.  I pleasantly discovered that her charm and gentle nature is just as real as it is in her writing.

On her blog, Kim has recently launched an on-line shop full of exquisite French treasures, inspired toys and homewares.  Make sure you check it out!

As always, please give our Featured Flogger lots of FYBF comment love.  You can also follow Spirited Mama on Facebook

 Man Spaghetti

Man-spag

I believe every woman deserves Man Spaghetti – spaghetti bolognaise made by a man, served by a man and cleaned up by a man.

Man spaghetti can be plated up by many varieties – by a husband, lover, father, brother, uncle, friend.

This recipe was created in the mad rush of a school night in the kitchen of one multi-tasking dad with two teenage kids. It’s fast, simple, and absolutely delish – and after personally testing, it got the thumbs up from one little fussy eater, too.

Despite its spicy touches, this recipe will not put hairs on your chest. What it will do is give the woman it is served to time out to do her nails, have a relaxing bath, breathe … what’s that you may ask? Go ahead, try some man spaghetti and find out. You’re worth it!

Bon appetite!

Man Spaghetti

2 tabs olive oil

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

500grams mince

1 cup finely grated carrot

1/3 cup tomato paste

1 tinned tomatoes

1 tab soy sauce (secret ingredient 1)

1 tab Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce (secret ingredient 2)

1 cup water or stock

½ packet spaghetti pasta

Tsp oil

Pinch of salt

Parmesan or grated cheese

In a heavy based frypan heat oil. Add onions and garlic, cook till soft, stirring. Add mince, cook till brown. Add carrot and ensure it’s cooked through till soft so no child can detect it’s a vegetable. Stir in tomato paste, tinned tomatoes. Add soy and Worcestershire sauces. Add water or stock and let simmer for 30 mins stirring occasionally.

To cook spaghetti, fill a large saucepan to ¾ with water. Boil water, add a teaspoon of oil to stop the pasta sticking and salt (optional). Add spaghetti. Stir to ensure covered with water. Cook with lid off for about 10 mins or until soft but firm (al dente).

Serve spaghetti in bowls, add bolognaise sauce and top with cheese.

Serves two adults, two teenagers and one child, or two adults and three children and four toddlers.

This looks awesome, although my husband is reading over my shoulder and thinks that man spaghetti is more like:

    1. meat
    2. a jar of pasta sauce
    3. pasta

“and just mix that ‘sh** together.”

Guess who does 99.99% of the cooking in out house!? Honestly.

    Thanks for hosting Grace!

Love this Kim – in our household hubby is the specialty spaghetti man, although the vote is usually for Poppy’s spaghetti (My Dad’s). Hubby is good at hiding vegetables. But I might be stretching it if I expected clean-up done too….he/she who cooks doesn’t usually clean up (although the other night I made a lovely potato, leek & celery soup and hubby left remainder in saucepan on stove overnight when he was supposed to tidy up – not impressed). May have to tell him he owes me a spaghetti.

I don’t want to sound like I’m gloating but being married to a chef (not practising but once a chef always a chef) I have on many, many occasions indulged in man-spaghetti and it is as good as you describe here, Kim. Admittedly though, it’s usually me doing the cleaning up. Oh well, can’t have it all I suppose.
