Let me tell you a little about my avid surfer husband. He is funny, an amazing, hands-on dad and will even throw in a love letter when he replaces my lost wedding ring.
He’s also one of the few people I know in the corporate sales world who genuinely loves their job.
However, fashion forward he is not. And he doesn’t care an iota.
He’ll take up every opportunity to do school drop offs with me, which is so great.
While it often goes unnoticed, one morning as we were all strutting down the hill to the school gate, I took a closer look at my beloved’s attire.
It looked very much like this.
Except the t-shirt worn during that particular drop-off was bright orange with “Why So Serious?” sprawled across it. Noice.
It suddenly hit me why some mothers had asked what my husband did for a living but looked surprised when I told him he was a national account manager in financial services.
His approachable, charming demeanor fit his job role. Just the clothes didn’t cut the mustard.
So, you could literally hear the fashion gods laughing (or possibly your truly) when he announced that – for the sake of “client relationship building” – he was “obliged” to attend the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
With back stage passes.
Shut up.
At least he scrubbed up that night. That French Connection slim fit dark blue shirt I got him for Christmas goes places, I tells ya.
In the meantime, I had my own glamourous evening looking after children, eating chicken and corn soup for dinner and watching Netflix in my Targét PJ’s.
And his verdict?
“The models are sooooooo skinny and look so serious!”
“Samantha Harris is gorgeous in real life, though. Most beautiful model there for sure”
“Oh, and here. Thought you might like these…
In obliviousness, he handed over some swag bags filled with fancy snacks, mineral water, hairspray and fancy, shiny USB sticks with the Mercedes Benz logo.
“All my female clients were going gah gah when they got this too. So, I thought maybe you’d want one as well…”
Again. Fashion Gods. Rolling on the floor.
I don’t care. I love my fashion impaired husband to pieces.
For one, it gives me great blogging fodder…and a Mon Purse.
There’s also something very stylishly confident and cool about how he just does not give a rat’s what people think of him.
And that beats any fashion trend.
When do you go for comfort over fashion? Ever been to Australian Fashion Week? What’s your school drop off attire? Ever seen or met a famous model in real life?

My daughter walked in MBFWA for the first time this year. With the pics that came out on social media afterwards someone asked “why so serious?” (see what I did there?) and she explained it was because the designers want people to focus on the clothes, not be drawn to the models big smiling face. Finally, the answer to the age old question!
Great haul by the way. I didn’t get to go either. Even as her mumager I had to make do with watching it from my hotel room via live stream.

For me, comfort trumps fashion every time and I could and probably should be arrested by the fashion police most days. I’ve never been to Fashion Week but I would never say no to a goodie bag especially one as fancy as that!

I’m going gah gah over your photo of your Mon Purse! I love your husband’s attitude to the event and his verdict of it! Possibly not the reaction the MBFWA organisers were hoping for. I hope his aim of attending the event was successful! It sounds like his female clients were impressed!

Wow, how fancy! I admit- I don’t know what a Mon purse is haha!
I’ve met a few – I was in Bali with one and she had to sit under a big hat and in long sleeves and ate salad while I had a burger and felt like an old fat frump (but that was me projecting all that judgement, she was super nice and funny). Of course, we’ve all been cheering on Leanne’s daughters skyrocketing career on the cover of not French Vogue and then Fashion week….so I think she wins this round!
Awww. Thanks Lydia! You’re a keeper …

Now there’s a nice PR goodie bag!
Back in my advertising days I would attend these events and similar as well as their VIP after parties. I saw Claudia Schiffer and another top model (whose name fails me right now). Lots of fun!
Enjoy your stuff!
PS: My husband’s weekend attire is to die for – literally!

Oh that’s really cute, sounds very much like my hubby. When not in his work gear it’s tshirt, boardies and thongs, although, he is colour blind and can tend to wear colours together that are questionable. I’m a smart casual kind of girl, I wear what I like and don’t really follow fashion trends.

Love this so much because it sums up so many of us. We wear ‘uniforms’ for the roles we have…but when we play we wear exactly what we want and that is soooooo good. Denyse xx PS I hope my post today doesnt affect you too much, my piano playing friend xx
My hubby Dean wears a hat very much like your husband’s in this pic! You all look very relaxed. Dean will always choose comfort over fashion. Always. And so do I though I struggle sometimes to not care what other people think! It’s an admirable trait. I’m getting better at it as I get older. 🙂

The best part of being fashion forward is to be confident in whatever you where, no matter who you are with or where you are. I think your hubby has that down to a pat 😉

My husband’s the same! Terrible fashion sense and doesn’t give a rats. And I love him for it! 😀

I’ve dragged hubby to more than a few shows over the years. Although generally the ones that have either a before or after party. He is definitely not there for the fashion and tends to wear the exact same outfit each and everyone. I don’t think anyone apart from myself actually notices.
I am not very fashion savvy, and prefer comfort over fashion – I can never understand why some women wear stilettos shopping! I seem them and I cringe! Your Hubby, sounds very similar to mine. He would rather wear his thongs, t-shirt and shorts over getting dressed up any day! 🙂 x

I must say I do like a bit of fashion it makes me feel good, however, stilettos have left the building for me in my old age, it’s wedges and flats for me. I’d love a goodie bag like that one.

Excellent Bowie reference in the title. My husband’s fashion sense looks to be a lot like your husband’s – shorts, tee, thongs in summer and jumper, trackies, sneakers in winter. He scrubs up alright when he needs to but you wouldn’t catch him at a fashion show! I try to choose comfortable fashion that is still cute, unless I’m cold or sick and then it’s straight comfort all the way!

Ha, ha – your hubby and mine are cut from the same cloth (get it) when it comes to fashion. Sounds like you did alright though. I have a good friend who is a fashion designer – she’s won some awards in Queensland over the years, but not in MBFW circles. I’ve met and interviewed both Megan Gale and Samantha Harris in my journo times (well I’m still actually a journo now, but in the TV days). These days are more yoga tights than fashion forward, but a girl has to dress up sometimes.
I’m with your husband – I have no idea about fashion and would have probably passed on the swag too!

I met one of the old miss Australia winners back when I was 13 doing a deportment course, but I can’t for the life of me remember who she is. My fashion extends to jeans and a t-shirt 95% of the time so I dare say I won’t be attending fashion week any time soon.

Good on hubby for thinking of you. Brownie points for that!
I’ve realised the last few weeks I need to buy more winter threads, the choices in the wardrobe are a little low and it’s getting cold!

Aww, good job hubby for thinking of you. I’d rather have been home in PJ’s too for sure, I just have barely enough fashion sense to get me by 🙂

Good on your husband for not giving a rats…I’d like to think a lot of us are like that outside of our work/professional environments. 🙂 I’ve never met any models and can’t say I’m too devastated!
