Trying to think of how to start writing about our big overseas holiday, it’s probably best to begin when it didn’t.
In the marathon training zone, my boss and I went for a run during a lunch break. How can pounding the pavement jeopardise a holiday? Two days prior to departure, no less.
It couldn’t…if you weren’t me.
Almost at the end, only 200 metres away from the office I tripped on the edge of an uneven footpath which happened to be right in front of the concrete stairs where I tumbled and crashed.
The intense pain so agonizing that paralysed tears. Blood shooting to the head as adrenalin kicked in.
Keep calm and drop F-Bombs.
The unforgettable scene of my boss placing my head on her lap, wiping the sweat off my forehead as random neighbours came outside with a bottle of water and sympathy.
The next 24 hours consisted of driving with a packet of frozen peas on the injured foot that swiftly turned to cankle. Searching for a doctor who was available to determine how bad the situ was.
GP was certain it was broken. I was determined it wasn’t.
I finally found a specialist – yay. Hobbled over to discover that his office was on the second floor in a building where the elevator wasn’t working – boo.
The Foot Gods were laughing their arses off.
They were on the floor in hysterics as I stumbled down two flights to get x-rays. Then climb back up with the images.
Diagnosis? No fracture but high ankle sprain.
Still okay to go to Japan, right?
Not without a crutch and moon boot.
Oh.
In less than 48 hours, I went from the excitement and anticipation of going on a month long holiday to two of my favourite places in the world to the crashing disappointment that nope. I wasn’t going anywhere. Holiday cancelled.
And the Canberra marathon came and went last weekend without running participant #490. Boo.
The one takeaway from all of this?
Nothing is certain in life but death, taxes and travel insurance. Always, ALWAYS get some #notsponsored #advicefromaklutz
Ever cancelled a holiday due to an act of klutz? Ever had cankles? Do you get travel insurance?

Oh no!!!!
Oh no …
We have cankles in common this week. Although mine were travel induced which is a little ironic (and a bit rub your nose it in) I guess.
So sorry Grace.

Oh no! That sucks…didn’t you injure yourself before another Japan trip too? Or am I just imagining that? I rolled my ankle two years ago walking down the stairs in my apartment block — I missed a stair and tumbled ironically on my way to the Physio for my knee.
And then two weeks ago, my left ankle was seriously swollen after a hike. I’ve booked myself in for ultrasound and X-rays next week to see if there’s any ligament damage. I’m learning that as you grow older, your body starts to fall apart!
Hope your let heals soon and you are able to do what you love again!

I feel for you, Grace, there is nothing more disappointing than cancelling a holiday. I got my second cancer diagnosis three days before I was supposed to be going on a homecoming “look how healthy I am ” tour. As upsetting as the diagnosis was (and all that it entailed) I was most upset about the holiday but praise be for travel insurance which meant we got every penny back and could rebook our holiday for a later date. Because everyone needs something to look forward to, right? On the flip side, you have heaps of time to prepare for Canberra 2017!

My husband did the same in the surf. He didn’t need a moon boot though as it wasn’t that bad. You poor thing. Moon boots are a great invention really.

Glad you got the holiday in the end and looking forward to the stories. You poor thing missing out on the marathon after all your training last year. While I’ve been injury free prior to travel hubby has been injury prone. He snapped his achilles tendon all the way through and had to have surgery two weeks before we travelled to China to adopt our daughter (I’ve shared the story before so you may have heard it, it was QUITE the adventure). And just before we were heading to Sydney for the 2000 Olympics he ruptured a calf muscle and so ended up hobbling around Homebush. The achilles was playing volleyball at work, the calf muscle mucking around playing handball with his niece. Go figure!
Oh no! Hopefully you’ll be able to rebook your holiday when your foot is healed!
Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Oh no.
I’m so bummed for you.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
I once had to cancel a trip too, now I always get travel insurance, it was a hard lesson to learn, but I’ll never forget it.
You will have an even better trip to Japan when you go later.
I can feel it in my cankles.
Lots of love, lovely lady. x

Oh o. I would be deviated. You look forward to something for soooo long and then a tiny (well what starts off as tiny) thing happens and BAM – everything changes. Hope holiday is OK Grace.

Oh Grace, what a freakin’ nightmare!! How very disappointing! Are you going to reschedule your holiday. Have never had to cancel a trip, unfortunately, although I came close once when the night before the huge Euro trip of a lifetime, my partner and I both came down with food poisoning. But I was determined to get on that plane even if I was on a drip,
Oh no, what terrible luck! I hope it heals quickly. What a major disappointment 🙁

Oh no, how disappointing!! I hope you’re on the mend soon. And yes, I always sign up for travel insurance. I have a few different options that offer discounts so can usually get such a good deal the cost is negligible.

Oh Grace, that’s terrible! I hope holiday insurance covered your cancellations!
I sprained my ankle the week I was going to fat camp back in 2010 or so… It was terrible because the trainer there couldn’t have cared less and I felt like I was just trying to get out of stuff so hobbled as much as I could. (And hurt my hip and knee as a result!)

What bad timing. Hoping you are healed back to.perfection soon. Xxxx
Oh Grace, you poor thing. That’s no fun at all.
The location of that office is ridiculous!!!
Oh no! That sucks big time, I really feel for you! I always buy travel insurance for overseas holidays, but just the really basic cover. I have tried to cancel a holiday before to NZ and it was all to hard, so I just went anyway and had to bloody work the whole time I was away. Thats what happens when a natural disaster hits and your job is natural disaster related!! Oh well!
I hop you are back up and running (literally) very soon! xx

I hear you on the easily rolled ankle fiasco…mine was getting out of the car on our slippery driveway (sloped) and not concentrating…as if that ever happens! I fell down the drive, to the letter box, tried to get up…calling to ‘deaf’ hub and eventually HOPPED my way up and inside to ….no sympathy, just oh dear. I knew it was more than OH freaking dear…and too long a story to tell but ended up (via local GP. X-ray place where again I HOPPED in) at Hills Hospital and surgery next day with added pins..NOICE. Lucky I loved the surgeon who did an ace job but it sure spoiled the next 6-8 weeks of my life having to be in a wheelchair at home and not able to be independent.
I was so sorry to read of your accident and glad that the travel insurance paid up and you still got your amazing holiday! D xx
