I’ve been having an affair. It’s been ongoing , long before I was married.
Mr Surfer even knows about it, much to his disgust. Staying oblivious to the intense feelings and deep passion.
During the rare rendezvous, I soak in the succulence, immersing in the deliciousness of this culinary delight.
Chicken feet. How I love thee.
Before you start dry retching at the sight, let’s just take a look at how nutritious a series of tendons, cartilage and skin can be and why the Chinese, Vietnamese, the Indonesians and even the Trinidadians are getting their claws (geddit?) into this delicacy.
Full of collagen, chicken feet is rich in protein and carbohydrates but also has benefits for healthier, younger looking skin. Who needs Botox? Get your booty to the nearest Yumcha feast!
That’s where I’m off to today! Chewin’ on some chicken bones, keepin’ my skin youthful.
So tell me, what’s your funky food fetish?

This is a compelling reason, but seriously, how do you do it?
Chicken feet aside, how does anyone do Yum Cha? I have tried and tried so many dishes because my husband and his family LOVE it, but I just can’t find one thing to even nibble on. Then there is the hustle and bustle and yelling out of prawn dumpling – oh, it is my worst nightmare!

I could totally go there, not sure why I haven’t, probably because when I was in Indo I preferred their awesome satays! xx

Sorry. I can not – could not – do. Maybe I’ll blame it on my irrational fear of birds? X

Hmm…no chicken feet {or any other feet} for me thanks! I have avoided it every single time. I also don’t do kidneys, liver or hearts.

I can’t do chicken feet – but did you know that in America, they export the feet, and they can’t keep up with the demand because they can’t sell the rest of the chicken fast enough! And if you piled up all the chicken feet they export, it would be as tall as the Empire State Building…Freakonomics did a show on it, which was fascinating!

Ewww Grace! As a vegetarian I find that seriously gross. Each to their own though. My funky fetish I suppose is pickled onions. I eat them by the jar full.

Hmm you could drag me along to avocado milkshake land, cos I was about to say I’ll try anything once, but … but… it’s not strictly true. Not quite ANYTHING. Feet, insides and heads of animals send me under the table like a 3-year-old. Now I know the secret of your gorgeous ageless skin though! Maybe they would work for me too if I ground them up into a little (un-clawlike) capsule???

I have never had chicken feet but I could soooo go me some yum cha!!! I’m not sure I have any weird food fetishes? Does peanut butter and jam on hot cross buns count? That’s not too weird is it?? xxxx

I’d eat them. Things like that don’t faze me. But come near me with banana or any kind of cheese? I am OUTTA HERE!

Do they cut their nails first? Or is it an added bonus for getting the little bits of sinew out that may be caught in your teeth? Haven’t tried Chicken Feet but I’ve had a go at a few other delicacies such as snails and frogs legs. Sounds beautiful though.

I don’t think I could go there. I went to an Agricultural High School and we raised chickens in Year 8. When they were slaughtered the boys would run around scaring the girls with chicken feet – they’d pull the tendon and the claw would work – very creepy haha. My husband thinks my mashed banana on toast is a weird thing to eat while I think his vegemite on crumpets is odd 🙂 Cheers, Tanya
I thought it looked okay until I knew what it was! I think I’m a bit too much of a whimp to try it!

I will stick to being in love with chocolate, and coffee, and wine. But I would probably try if I had the chance, like everything else, so I’ve heard, I’m sure it would just taste like chicken!

one of my best friends in the US is Philipino. We used to go to their place at least once a week, and Sundays she always cooked up a heap of Philippino food – then ate it all herself! None of us westerners could stomach it. We used to joke she’d be great on that TV show where they had to go through rounds and one was always to eat something like pigs feet or chicken feet. The joke was she’d not only finish her plate but ask if the contestants were going to finish theirs too lol! Enjoy Grace! I don’t think anyone will be fighting you for those 😉

Oh Grace, my MIL though it was so hilarious, the first time I did yum cha with them, she put a great big bowl in front of me, and I was too polite to say no! I only had one, and as OK as the flavour was, I can’t get past the little toes 🙁
Having said that, we’re regular yum cha eaters, and I’m off today with my mum, sister and aunty. Bell and John have both put their orders in of what I have to bring home!
Enjoy yours x

I used to eat it when I was younger.. but I just can’t bring myself to now haha. Call it by it’s nicer name “Phoenix Claws” and maybe more people would try it 😛 Do you remember kani miso (lit. crab brain)?? I love that stuff!

I don’t really do ‘different’ that much. I like vegemite and apple and cheese on toast. I know what a wuss!
Although I can’t say that I love chicken feet, I do love me some Yum Cha. I miss living in Sydney for that reason; Yum Cha just isn’t the same in the Far North. Have some pippies for me. East Ocean used to be our favourite restaurant until they changed how you order to be’ just order what you want and we’ll bring it to you’ (where’s the fun in that?)

I’m going to have to take your word for this. Growing up with Dutch grandparents I was introduced and craved rollmops from a young age. I don’t think I could stomach them now that I know what they are. lol Not entirely sure it was a Dutch thing or just something they loved.
I’ve linked up a post from both blogs today. Hope that is ok? I’m also off to sit at the orthodontist while he bleeds me dry aka commences work on my daughters braces before she had jaw surgery next year. So I will hopefully be doing a lot of blog hopping to distract me.
Have a great weekend Grace.

Sorry Grace I nearly gagged when I saw the chicken feet. I haven’t tried them, but just the sight of them looks a bit …eeewww. I’m sure they’re delicious though 🙂 I don’t have any weird food fetishes, but I do loovve Yum Cha! Especially the seafood dumplings. Yummy 🙂

I LOVE YUM CHA! It completes me, I have to say though I draw the line at Chicken Feet. I had a cantonese boyfriend many years ago and he loved nothing more than sitting at the table (of our chinese written menu restaurant – me the only white girl, awkward!) sucking the bejesus out of the chicken scratchers while I enjoyed my rather safe prawn rolls and dumplings.
McDonalds chocolate sundaes with french fries 🙂

Oh Grace, I love yum cha but I just can not do the chicken feet. My old boss used to use them as an initiation for new employees. He’d do a welcome to the company lunch at the local yum cha, “but you MUST try to house speciality!” Must admit I never knew about the health benefits though!

Love yum cha. Zilver is my current fave. Don’t mind a bit of pied da chook, but am a bandit for mango pancake. I don’t think I have any particular fetishes but I do like to save all the best bits of the meal for the final mouthful. Gordon finds this endlessly amusing x
I’m sorry Grace, but that is just too gross for me! I couldn’t do it. I do love me a good Yum Cha though, it’s probably the thing I miss the most about working in the city, going to Yum Cha for lunch whenever I wanted was the best!

Obviously I love yum cha, as demonstrated by the wonderful recipes I share on my blog, he he. I love going out for yum cha too and have had chicken feet (and other exotic things) before. Can’t really do the chew I’m afraid. In Japan we tried some things that were just as chewy, so I’m up for trying anything once.
