Over the weekend, Mr Surfer and I watched the movie, “About Time”.

Not to give too much away, it’s about time travel, but only to the past.

Lately, we’ve been running this household on fumes. Lots of trips to the GP, appointments with specialists, compromising around each other’s busy schedules, playing tag team caring for sickie twinions due to missed preschool days.

Truth be told, under the pressures of keeping a marriage in tact, we’ve been getting a little stabby.

It’s been a while we sat still on our couch and enjoyed a movie together.

But serendipity got us real good with this flick.

Its premise asks:

“If it were possible, which particular moment would you return to?”

“What would you change?””

“What would you do differently?”

It made me think.

What if I didn’t study Japanese in university? What if I hadn’t moved overseas for all those years? Would I still have the family I have today and this abundance in love and laughter?

Perhaps, I would’ve picked up the courage to leave that mundane office job, follow my dreams to start my own business?

But for me, there was a far more thought provoking message in the movie:

“Which particular events of your life would you leave perfectly alone?”

All those times that were far from perfect or flawless. Yet they created delicious, nostalgic memories leaving a tingle riding up my spine, planting a huge everlasting smile on my face.

The 4^th birthday party’s empty piñata leaving many a preschooler disappointed but had every adult bowling over in laughter at our parenting epic fail.

Walking precariously through the creaky corridor of the first home we bought, nervously wondering if this house – the biggest purchase ever – is also a sound one.

Too often we try to meticulously plan an existence filled with maximum happiness, minimum sorrow or dismay; fretting in trying to control the uncontrollable; we forget to float in that one fleeting moment in time.

What if we were to simply accept the unexpected? Appreciate the unintentional.

Discover the delights of the extraordinary in the ordinary.

And as eloquently expressed in the movie:

“We’re all travelling through time together, every day of our lives. All we can do is do our best; to relish this remarkable ride…”
