Goals: Setting Them and Achieving Them

April 2, 2012 By: mamagrace718 Comments

Joining in Week 13 for the Simplify Your Life Challenge, we’re asked to assess where we’re at with the goals that we set for ourselves back in Week 6.

Okay, I’m a bit behind the eight ball on this one.  I’ve jumped in midway on this challenge, I missed out on Week 6.  Better late than never, this post is going to be a double whammy.  It’s a list and review (thus far) of my 2012 aspirations.

When it comes to goals, I’m not a big fan of the “I should…”, “I must…”, “I have to…”  because in the past, when I started off with these sentences, it always felt like I was actually being answerable to someone – or something – else and not myself.

I’ve spent years working on corporate career goals.  I can also give a big tick to achieving financial ones.

Then there are the challenges of motherhood.  These of course will always continue.

But this year, the focus is going to shift a little.  It’s going to move over back to me.

As the boys are stepping into the routine of day care, I’ve got some extra hours in the week to breathe, rebuild my self-esteem and actively search my passions and interests.

It’s going to be about my personal growth and development.

It may sound a little selfish.  But if I don’t do this for myself, not only will I suffer, but also my family.

Health:

– To keep up my running and aim to cover a total of 20 kilometres every week.

– To run the City2Surf race again, for the third year in a row.  Oh, and to shave another 5 minutes off my personal best…Easy !

Skills/Education/Career:

– To finish my Introduction to Nutrition course

– Update my resume

– Update my LinkedIn profile

Spiritual:

– Meditate for 10-15 minutes every day

– Try out more meditation courses

Perhaps, the list looks somewhat barren. But that’s actually its beauty.  I’m not going to over-compensate myself.   Rather than try to do too much and none of them properly, I’m going to stay realistic.

And now for the million and one dollar question: Am I on track  ?  Am I getting there ?

I’m definitely on my way.

For the past couple of months, running has taken a huge priority.  I make sure that daycare days are my running days.  Then there is the odd spare hour here or there in the early mornings, which all help me reach my 20 kms mark.  It’s tough.  And sometimes I’m a click or two short.  But meh.  I know I’m trying.

Updating the resume and the LinkedIn profile is a work in progress.  I want to get it right.  It’s going to take a little more mind-mapping, getting through a few rough drafts, even doing some self-sessions in brainstorming.  But I’ve got the confidence.  I just need to make the time.

In the meantime, I’ve signed up for another semester of my Nutrition course.  I start next month.  I’m ready.  Bring it on.

Then there’s the “Ooommm” in me.  I took a meditation course yesterday.  Loved it.  I’m not quite sure what compelled me to sign up.  Maybe it was the 14 day meditation challenge I did with my buddy, Kirri over at Happy Mums at Home last year. Whatever it was, it stirred up an interest.  Yesterday’s course was inspiring.  Uplifting, even.  And although this morning at 5:30, was only my first day of committing to daily meditation, I’m pretty excited about sticking to it.

So yes, life so far this year has been great.  But I’m damn sure it’s just going to get better.
