Since they started crawling over a month ago, the boys have been going at it at full pelt. They have even started to lift themselves up onto the couch or the baby gate. And as we all know – what goes up, must come crashing down.
With twins, the domino theory absolutely applies. Picture this:
Little N (aka Twin A) tries to lift himself up onto the couch. Little K (aka Twin B) is sitting next to him quietly playing with a toy. Little N loses balances, falls on top of his twin brother. Little K tumbles backwards. Which screaming twin do I pick up first ?
Despite the fact that we have fully baby-proofed the house, I’m going to need a pacemaker by the time I hit 40. I don’t think I can cope with any more of these episodes where my heart literally leaps out of my mouth and I’m pretty sure that I’m about to go into cardiac arrest.
Then, there’s the pushing, eye-gauging, hair-pulling and fighting over toys. I know, I know. They still don’t quite understand what they’re doing, or who they’re doing it to…yet. But the tears are still very much there.
For Pete’s sake…they’ve even started fighting over the remote control (Really ??? Does it start THAT young ???). Little N’s latest trick is to change the channels while the remote is securely wedged in his mouth.
By Friday, things were looking up. Papa came home early from his business conference and as soon as he walked in the door, there were smiles all around. As gorgeous as that scenario is every time I see it…I then start to think, “Right. What am I ? Cream cheese ?” Oh well. C’est la vie.
Looking on the bright side…things got even better. We had booked Aunty Juju to come over and baby sit so that hubby and I could go on date night. Now, besides their Nulla Nanna, the boys have only been baby-sat once by non-family members. And that was waaaay back when they were only 10 weeks old. And there have always been two sitters.
Even with her nanny qualifications, the task of looking after twin munchkins by herself was a little daunting for Aunty Juju. But I had complete faith. I knew she was no ordinary baby-sitter. Aunty Juju is in fact the youngest sister of an dear old high school friend. Despite losing touch for some time, we were reconnected when I randomly bumped into them at our local supermarket. (Don’t you just love it when life gives you a spin out like that ?) What gives this story a real twist is that, maaaaaany moons ago, I used to baby-sit Aunty Juju when she herself was a wee little lass !!!
So, I didn’t have to go through the pains of entrusting my boys with a complete stranger. Instead, all the stars in the universe aligned themselves perfectly to present me with this responsible, experienced, warm-hearted, gorgeous girl who has known me pretty much all her life. And most importantly, she loves my boys.
As for date night – Nothing too exciting to report, I’m afraid. As we were too busy that week to make any prior bookings to a restaurant, our choices were limited. (It had actually crossed our minds to just use the free time to take a long nap in the spare bedroom). We ended up settling on having a quick dinner at a nearby Italian restaurant…owned by a Chinese person (*Raises right eye-brow suspiciously*). At least we got to go out to remind ourselves what the rest of the world does on a balmy Friday night.
Alas, the evening was cut a little short. Towards the end of the meal, there was no reply to our: “How are things going ?” text. Polishing off my red wine, we raced home, thinking the worse. Screaming twin banshees; stressed out baby-sitter suffering major migraines.
We arrived home and all was quiet and tranquil. Aunty Juju had left her mobile in her bag, on silent mode. Phew !
Right. So. That was last week. What’s in store for this week ??? Hmmm…
Acknowledgement:
Due to time constraints, slight signs of temporary madness and much needed sleep, I was very close to closing up this blog this week. A big thanks to those friends who have reached out to let me know that they are not only reading my ramblings, but actually interested in what I have to say. A little message of encouragement or hitting the “Like” button goes a looooong way with this SAHM. So, thank you. I’m not sure where I’m taking this blog to just yet. But for those who will bear with me and continue reading, I will do my best not to disappoint 🙂
