Sleep.
We never get enough of it. But we can’t function without it. We wonder when our children will start doing it more effectively. But what’s the point in asking for the impossible?
In the meantime, we try and get it – any time, any where and in any way we can.
The twinlets have decided that if they can’t get any of it, none of us can.
The relentless round the clock crying and wailing for no good reason are sending Mr Surfer and I around the merciless twist of insanity.
One twin seems to always make his way into our bed, tucking himself up on top of my arm. The other night I was sprawled out like an overworked starfish with a twinlet under each.
My usually even keel husband has nothing left in his sleep tank. Running on fumes he’s dropping the F-Bomb each time he has to cart a twinlet back to his own bed.
Then, there’s the ultimate slap across the face when people ask us why the twinlets haven’t been sleeping.
Do ya think life would be in such disarray if we knew???
It’s like people forget about the mysterious disconnect between children and sleep.
While doing some research for a business project, I somehow stumbled onto this YouTube clip.
And while it’s completely irrelevant to the information I was actually after, it was exactly what I needed to watch.
Let me be a sloth.
Just for today. Just for this whole duration we call parenting.

Ahh Grace! I want to be a sloth today so bad! I have been up at 10.30pm, 2.30am, 3am and now. I know what you mean by that question, why aren’t they sleeping? Drives me up the wall!! If someone asks me that today I’m sure there will be F-bombs involved 😉

I read in bed while the youngest goes to sleep next to me. When asleep I put him in his own bed then the oldest climbs in next to me and goes to sleep. Sometime in the night the youngest wakes and comes back in, then the oldest gets up and goes back to his own bed. Was complaining to a friend recently who made me think when she said “just enjoy it. They won’t be young forever,”. So I’m trying to 🙂

Sleep deprivation is a form of torture!
I am amazed that you seem to be so full of energy in all your photo’s, running, glamping etc. I do not know how you can be so incredible on so little sleep.

You never really get how much you love sleep, until you can’t get it. Ever.
With two kids at different ages, sometimes it feels like they are purposely planning their sleepless nights to line up next to each other, insuring that 5 out of 7 nights are sleepless.
I’m well up for being a sloth!

I need to be a sloth today – have been pulling too many late nights getting reports done. I recall when my children were younger and the many nights of no sleep and children in the bed – they were so small but took up more than half the bed and the wiggling and the kicking in their sleep. What chance do you have of even getting a few hours of solid sleep !

I wish I coould get more sleep! I have pregnancy insomnia (not to mention needing to pee every hour during the night and my partner does shift work. Between all that I dont get much sleep. Im sure it will be worse in a few short weeks though o.O

I’m with you, babe. I wanted a nap today badly. Been solo parenting a fortnight, with a long weekend and a curriculum day today for the boy. The 6yo girl has been sleeping in my bed and having nightmares again, nothing quite like being woken from deep sleep by some yelling in your ear.
Thought I’d treat myself to a reading session in bed but the (well-meaning but rule clueless) landlord rang and came over again wanting to check the hot water unit, but barged inside anyway, breaking all the rules. I VANT TO BE ALOOOOOONE!!

Oh Grace, the exact same thing has been happening in our house this week as well! At this stage Punky is still in the cot which means one of us has to go in and stand or sit next to the bloody thing patting, shhhing and rubbing her back until she decides to go back to bed. Tuesday night was so bad that poor Dave only ended u with 2 hours of sleep, half an hour of that on the floor beside the cot! He is normally very good at handling the sleep deprivation but like Mr. Surfer he just ran our of steam, sleep and patience and I’ve not seen him looking so tired or unhappy for quite a while. And it is the worst when there just is no reason for it! I’m just trying to tell myself that she is getting us match-fit for having a newborn in the house! Although what I’m going to do with a newborn and a crying toddler in the middle of the night when Dave is on night shift I do not know! I think we may all end up in my bed together!

As for sleep, I’m shaking my head in commiseration. I feel we are only just coming out of the worst of that. We have two kids who are quite close in age so probably shades (very light shades) of having twins. One recent change we made was getting king single beds. It means we can transfer back to their beds and lie down comfortably (and sleep) if necessary.
Hope it ends for you soon. xx

Totally a lover of sloths right here – and Fug All Fridays!
My boys, 21 months and 3.5 years have just started sharing and my youngest no longer, okay rarely, comes in to our room at 3am anymore – BUT they are still up at 5.15a, and then wake their big sis! But I feel your pain. Mine kids have NEVER been sleep champs – and for the past 5 years I could count how many times I’ve had a full night’s sleep on one hand – hang in there G xx

I have no advice but I can just send you positive sleepy vibes. When people tell me their child slept from 8 weeks right through and sometimes they have to wake them up in the morning, I want to punch them in the face.
We have terrible nights and we have better nights, but we rarely have awesome nights.

Oh Grace, I want to climb into that bucket with you and sleeeeeeeeeep. I’ve been there STILL with my 4-year old until very, very recently (as in, two weeks ago). She’s old enough now to ‘get’ the notion of a reward system, so we put a stamp on a chart for every night she’s made it through in her own bed, and when she gets 5 or 10 stamps (whatever), she gets a prize. We’re working up to the BIG prize… 40 SLEEPS!! (who cares what the prize is 😉 Good luck mate. Hang in there xxxx

I would so love to be a sloth! After 9 years of broken sleep I am finally having a few nights of full sleep occasionally – I’m hoping we are coming out on the other side….finally! I think sometimes you get bad sleepers and there is no real reason for it. My eldest has issues going to sleep but is normally okay once he gets there, Miss 7 has NEVER been a good sleeper and has only in the last year started to get better and Miss 3 has only just transitioned to a big girl bed in the last few months – that has been an interesting time… It WILL get better eventually Grace – hoping you guys can catch enough z’s in between to keep functioning. Thinking of you all xx
