If I had all the time in the world to do all that I wanted to do in this world, it would come to 2 things – running and writing.
Yeah okay, binge watching Suits comes a close third.
My boss rang me the other day to praise me on an email I had written to a client.
She also mentioned that she had forwarded it on to my colleague who wants to use it as a template for the entire sales team.
“I told her you were a writer, anyway…” she beams. The fatal mistake of telling your boss you blog.
Ha! If a mundane business letter makes me a writer…well, then…
Pulling out a pile of old notebooks, I found one from almost exactly a year ago.
The illustrious writer and published author, Karen Andrews started a Mini Nanowrimo challenge setting up a prompt for each day. Do you remember it?
Here’s one little extract from the journal:
*****
Prompt: The Beach
Precariously, they tiptoed to the edge – the precipice of where the foamy waves reached the shore.
Their little toes tickled as soon as the icy cold water chased and caught them.
“Look Mama! The waves can’t catch me!!!” he squealed in ultimate delight.
She sat back on the sand, soaking in the sun and their handsome smiles.
One day my dear boy, she pondered, it won’t be the waves chasing you.
*****
Of course, the lazy undisciplined writer in me didn’t complete the challenge but reading this and other prompts, did bring back some wonderful memories.
And hope.
Hope that maybe, one day…I will have all the time in the world. And if I don’t, I’ll somehow make it.

Congrats on your email and on your notebook – what a beautiful piece of writing. I’m afraid I have to answer no, no and no on all counts! But if I had all the time in the world to do the things I want, I would run too. I’d also bake (but not at the same time as I run obviously!)

Suits??? Never heard of this one.
I like your viral office email, must have been good! I had a couple of assignments kept by uni lecturers who wanted to use them for future reference with students. (Probs so they didn’t need to prepare lessons!)
Love that beach shot and wish I could just step right in and go for a swim.

I don’t really want to write a novel, but will use NaNoWriMo to pump out a few more picture book manuscripts. Which isn’t what it’s for, so I’m not signing up, but I’m finding it inspirational nonetheless. I have never sen Suits. And I used to write all the email and letter templates for my business, so yes! I also used to organise bootcamp for our office and would write each one in the form of a well-known movie. My Zoolander one was the best. “Ever wanted to be really really really really ridiculously good looking?” And so on…

Not a work email, but minutes from a meeting. I wasn’t really sure I wanted to be complimented on them haha. NaNo…I’m torn. I don’t have a laptop at the moment so if I do it, it will mostly be on my phone. And my fingers feel sore just thinking about that!

Another no, no and no-er, I’m afraid. I haven’t heard of Suits either, but always keen to get good recommendations! Writing a novel has always lurked around on my ‘want to do’ list, but I’ve never done anything about it, so I guess I don’t want it that badly, haha! Maybe one day, when that mysterious beast ‘time’ magically presents itself…

“Running writing”…that’s what you learn to do after being proficient at printing in handwriting lessons, yeah?
Ok, seriously, like your work and that your writing is recognised there. I am all about ‘to the power of the template’ and I’m sure over years have learned from others too.
Good for you giving this a go again in November.

I once had a email go viral for the wrong reasons. Had to send the minutes from a meeting to all the staff and put all the names present at the meeting on the top and instead of typing Denis, I typed Penis. I was so embarrassed because spellcheck didn’t pick it up because it was a word. Thankfully our sales manager Denis found it funny too. 🙂

I don’t think I’d ever have the discipline or the time to do NaNoWriMo so I haven’t ever bothered to try. Truth is I’m flat out fitting in all my blog writing and that along keeps me up until 11 at night. I too dream that one day I’ll have all the time in the world to write, but I don’t see it happening for a good 15 years or so until this parenting gig isn’t as full on.

It’s hard isn’t it? I currently have all of the time in the world, but find I have time for nothing. I was actually far better at scheduling my life when I worked long hours and had limited time.
But I know what you mean… I suspect it’s about priorities and work and family have to come first for most of us.

I did some creative writing for a new campaign for a client over the past month and I forgot how much I love crafting a story that’s not a blog post or an article. It was so much fun. I’m going to take it on more often just as something to stretch my brain a little. And as for my business letters, they are good, but they’ve never gone viral! Go you. LOL.
