I can vividly recall my very first Mother’s Day. For all the wrong reasons.
I was at the brink of recovery from a 2 month bout of nipple thrush.
I was sleep deprived trying to keep up boobie juice supply from the demands of constantly hungry, thriving 3 and a half month twins.
To top things off, I had had a HUGE fight with Mr Surfer.
Glancing at a post natal photo of myself, I whinged about how my face had ballooned with water retention. You could’ve easily mistaken me for a watermelon.
“Well, it’s not about you anymore”
Being facetious is one of my husband’s less enduring qualities.
Every year, our daycare conducts a Mother’s Day interview with the boys. Allow me to share some of this year’s answers.
K-Bear:
How old is your Mum?
10.
What does she do to relax?
She is dancing.
What does she always say to you?
Papa is at work.
Nunu:
What is your Mum good at?
Playing with me.
What is she not good at?
She sometimes send me in the corner.
What is her princess name?
Arthur.
Laughing and crying then crying and laughing while reading this, I realized that for all it’s worth, there is some truth to Mr Surfer’s words.
It isn’t about me anymore.
It’s about my family.
How they perceive me.
I’m banking that it’ll be as a loving (if not sometimes nagging) mum, a devoted (with hints of crabby) wife, a chauffeur, a human couch, sometimes a good cop, often the bad one.
Most importantly, to my 5 year old boy, I am Princess Arthur.
I have no idea who Arthur is or what I did to deserve the highly distinguishable and distinct title.
Along with every other mum juggling balls, wearing countless hats, aprons, corporate heels (or flats in my case); it’s not about us anymore.
Not even on Mother’s Day.
But it’s about so much more.
What’re your plans this Mother’s Day? What’s your princess name ? (Go on, ask them!) Do you remember your first Mother’s Day?

I can’t wait to ask my boys what my princess name is tonight! Haha. I will be getting a large flat white in bed (standard Sunday morning anyway but it’s my bliss!) and a card (I have requested this, men need the reminder!) and because I have no idea what I want I think there will be some money slipped in for good measure 🙂
PS: I have messaged you on FB regarding having issues getting your button to display on my blog! I have linked up anyway but if you could get back to me sometime so I can get that issue sorted ASAP would be awesome! 🙂

Man oh man, I cannot imagine the pain and dedication for feeding twins with nipple thrush..and you do such a great job through the thickness and thinness of being a mama.
Love the boys’ comments. I love it when schools/preschools do that kind of memory-making.
We have no plans for Mother’s Day, I said to my grown kids Mother’s Day is also for them to have a day together. It is harder in a way that we are not close by but I am not letting it get me down. Mother’s Day can be a mixed bag. I always felt ‘obliged’ about Mother’s Day and all that..so I am not placing any of that on my grown families.
Last year, however, I got a line in a card from Grandson Hugo (6 then) which was “you are the best Grandma a guy could ever have”. LOVE!
Happy Mother’s Day Grace. Denyse x

Yes, I remember my first mothers day, bought a tear to my eye. I’ve just returned from a school liturgy, all the kids had to write a message and have a photo taken of them next to it. Then they made it into a movie with music. I had a tear as well this year, my 5 year old, wrote “I love mum”.

Since I have an 18 month old the memories of the crazy infant stage are so fresh for me – you must have struggled with breastfeeding twins and nipple thrush! I wasn’t able to breastfeed for long so I admire you for fighting to do it. It is so important if you are able to. I totally relate to it not being about me and how lovely for you to see how adored you are for all of your efforts and selflessness. I am not sure what is in store this mother’s day but I hazard a guess there will be a nice breakfast involved. Happy Mother’s Day!
