Completely late in the game but I’ve just discovered (and have become addicted to) “Mad Men”
OMG! Why didn’t you guys tell me how awesome this show is?!!
Yes, the salacious story lines and sordid affairs are intriguing. The ongoing themes of greed, power and deception have all left me hooked for the next episode and the next and the…then it’s way past midnight.
Above all, I love the fact that I can watch it, study the main characters and completely judge them guilt-free and with complete validation.
Smoking and drinking while pregnant, letting your child play with a dry cleaning plastic bag over their head, drink driving, slapping another person’s child across the face, the sexist and misogynistic cringeworthy comments not only from men but from women themselves, self-deprecating their own social standing.
This is was early 60’s and wow! what an effed up, insane time it was!
Then I thought, what will our children or even our grandchildren think about our society?
What would they look back and balk at in disbelief? What will be completely inconceivable to them about our current society? What will they know that we won’t? How long is a piece of futuristic string?
“OMG, can you believe they held those high radiation, brain-cell burning phones to their heads when they spoke??? What the?”
“Same-sex marriage was illegal??! Whaaaa?”
“People actually physically drove to shops, stressed themselves out trying to find a parking spot, then dealt with the pains of queuing up in lines to buy stuff???”
“People took photos of themselves and posted it on the internet? Er, why???”
“The Australian team wore that to the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games? No way!!!”
I could keep on going but I need to start packing for the long weekend.
So what are your thoughts? What aspects of our era will future generations think was total whack?

I haven’t seen the show yet, but it is on my list. Heard it’s great!
You’ve nailed it with the “looking back in time” components of our lives.

I’m eagerly awaiting the new season of Mad Men myself, I love it! The weird thing is it’s not that long ago when you think about it! As for our kids and grandkids, they’ll probably think we were crazy with all our social media and smartphone addictions.

I’ve seen all of season one. Took me a little while to get into it. I spent most of the time with my jaw on the ground. Can’t wait to watch season two now.

I’ve not seen it – but everyone suggests it when I ask what we should watch (it was a toss up between Breaking Bad or Mad Men, and Breaking Bad won…)

I’ve been watching Mad Men since the first episode. Don Draper… mmmm. On a serious note, I think the world will be stunned at the terrible treatments we have for cancer; chemotherapy/radiation. I hope so anyway.

But I have been trying to tell you (and anybody else) about Mad Men for years now. I am completely obsessed. I am obsessed to the point where I’ll read about the inner lives of the minor characters on fan forums and bore my husband by dissecting the outrageous antics of Don Draper. Meanwhile if you thought things in the 1960s were politically incorrect you should check out the Vikings. (Oh my! you really should check out the Vikings, particularly the shirtless sword fighting scenes)

I’ve never watched mad men and thinking into the future, perhaps our grandchildren may find the types of cars we drive weird or the clothes we wear or the fact that we used iphones!

I don’t watch TV, it’s the only way I fit so much in to my day BUT everyone keeps raving about this show. I might need to ‘case’ it purely from a research & development perspective. Although how many episodes are there and how much catching up do I have to do?

I love Mad Med too, but I think Don is a very floored man. Apart from his looks he doesn’t have alot going for him.

Haven’t watched Mad Men. I don’t have enough time in my day as it is 🙂 But I do like to play “what things do we do that our grandkids will think are insane”. I think some of the rubbish masquerading as food these days will draw disbelief. Also Miley Cyrus.

Oh I’m on the Mad Men bandwagon. I’ve watched all 7 seasons of it. I love the historical element of it, the fashion, the scandals… it’s sexy!

Lee-Anne says
I have a love/hate relationship with Mad Men. I’ve watched all seasons, despite disliking most characters and finding it all style and very little substance. It’s such a beautiful recreation of a bygone era that I lap up the sets – the clothes, decor and even the endless smoking and drinking (before lunch!) And basically, it’s impossible not to be dazzled by Don. 😉
I hope our legacy won’t be our obsessive narcissism and instead be our incredible inroads with medical science.

Grace, I do love you but forgive me if it takes me a moment to speak to you again?! (Have you learnt nothing from me and my obsession with Don..?) Hmmpph.
Whatever our kids find retro crazy (dumb phones, the tyranny of TV scheduling, hard format music…) there’ll definitely be plenty to choose from.

I’m going to have to get onto this show, Grace! I love watching period shows for that exact reason – seeing how much our world’s changed for the better makes me hopeful for our children’s future. Love Child on channel nine was similar for me.
I hope in the future we can reflect on now and breathe a sigh of relief that we all made it through unscathed.
Thanks for having me, this is my first FYBF and I’m totally excited! Bron

I want to get onto Mad Men. We do a series at a time. We have just finished Braking Bad, and are now doing Game of Thrones. I need to talk Husband into Mad Men. He so not interested. What do you think? Does it cater to men, or is it totally a girls show?

I’ve never heard of Mad Men but I think I need to look it up. We were just talking about wacky things the other night and we think that our grand kids will all be watching TV through their own pair of google glasses and they’ll think it’s hilarious that we watched on a big box. Imagine??

Very thought provoking grace. Well hopefully they’ll think we were backwards – i’d hate to think that into the future we don’t progress, esp on social justice issues but I imagine there will other stuff to be worried about too if they don’t get the greenprint right for one. Hope u have a great long weekend. Kimx

I’m a huge fan of Mad Men, I do have a lot of catch up to do on the series. Love the story line and the characters! Sometimes, I think of the people in the past, what would they think about us always holding a technical device in our hands and walking around with our finger tapping our phones! I’m sure they would think we are all crazy!
