Immersing in the sun, surf and sand, the conventional domestic Australian life is a million light years away.
The sense of liberation from being on holiday releases all apprehensions, instead enticing adventure, excitement and cocktails by the pool.
Having your hair tied in plaits decorated with tiny beads by that sweet vendor by the beach (She does awesome massages too! Score!), was a great idea…at the time.
You sashay towards the tropical sunset in that batik dress from the markets, feeling adequately boho chic. Finally, you feel one with the locals…except that’s not what the locals wear.
Arriving back to the normalcy of suburbia, reality hits: You are a Bali beach bargain tragic.
What is it about beach holidays that skew your fashion sense?
A year since our trip to Bali, it’s finally hit me how many crazy purchases I bought. But this time, I’m not the victim. It’s the twinions.
Mostly thanks to these beauties:
This entire time they’ve been sitting at the bottom of the drawers.
Subconsciously, I’ve been trying to shove them right out of existence, ignoring how ridiculously loud they actually are.
This morning, in a vain attempt to get some wear out of them, I tried to convince K-Bear how cool it was to have all these animals on his pants.
He cooperatively put them on, but then looked down and gave me a look of disdain:
“Mama, you have GOT to be kidding me…”
In his almost 5 years, while he rarely protests what his mother dresses him, he wasn’t going to let her pull these ugly overalls, er…this one over his eyes.
As for practical reasons to wear them, there are none.
Guaranteed, I’ll be cleaning up a pee (or dare I say, poo) mess first before I manage to get to those fiddly buttons. Worse yet, the daycare teachers would never EVER forgive me.
Alas, I am a self confessed hoarder. As ghastly as they are, I’ll cling onto them like I am to the twinions’ pre-school years.
One day, they might be donated to charity (if anyone in their right, conscious mind will have them). Maybe they can somehow transpire into cool cushions.
Or am I just kidding myself?
Have you ever done a fashion faux pas on your kids? What was the ugliest thing you were made to wear as a kid?

Um, I can’t think of anything nice to say about those little outfits, so,I won’t say anything 🙂
I am guilty of having bought a strawberry outfit for my 5 month old. She hasn’t worn it yet, but I do wonder what possessed me to think of dressing my baby as a fruit.

I’m guilty of having dressed my girl/boy twins in matching outfits as toddlers. Not too bad you’re probably thinking but wait …. the girl had red ladybug print leggings and the boy had looser green ladybug print pants! Totally tragic! Sorry twinnies! Lucky they probably don’t remember this themselves, especially him!

Oh yeah baby, turn them into tea towels or hand towels or cushions so that you can justify buying them 🙂
And yeah I have done somethings like that over the years, we used to dress our two older boys in the same clothes cause they were only 17 months apart. Now looking back on it maybe they would have liked different clothes? But it did save a lot of time and hassle when dressing them in the early mornings to get out of the house.
My hubby is the worst for clothes – he will wear stripes with anything – shirts that don’t match the pants/shorts and I usually have to say “Um, do you really want to go out like that” 🙂

Oh you make me laugh Grace!
Those overalls are definitely colourful! My girls have had the batik bali dresses, but they seem much less offensive somehow.

Lol Grace! Great timing on this one. My Aunt has just come back from Bali with outfits for the girls. They are actually sporting them on one of my recent FB photos for the blog. I think they look pretty cute though. Those overalls above are something else though. Oh my God. I am laughing now. I just remembered when we were in Thailand I bought a strapless short dress from the markets. I have no idea why I bought it. It’s so tacky. I wore it over there but never again after that.

Maybe you could use them to dress some cuddly toys you have!! I resisted the hair being braided and told the lovely but persistent ladies that ‘no name’ so they called me No Name, eg Good morning No Name, how are you today, want your nails done? It was hilaire! x

Bahahhahhaha you have to bribe them into at least ONE photo with these on. They will wet themselves laughing one day. I think they are super-cute, but I am a fashion disaster so take that for what it’s worth. Zilch.

The ‘Bali beach bargain tragic’ description made me laugh – that is so true! Stuff that has no place in your day to day life somehow gets purchased when you’re in the alternative travel reality!
